What is PPDT and TAT?

PP-DT stands for Picture Perception and Description Test conducted on day one of the SSB process after the Intelligence test. The Intelligence tests your IQ (Intelligence Quotient) while PP-DT tests your EQ (Emotional Quotient) and maturity level. As the selection ratio in the screening test is approximately 30%, performance in PP-DT plays a very crucial role.

Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) is a projective psychological test. It consists of a set of ambiguous pictures that will be shown to the candidate on which the candidate has to write a story. Thematic Apperception Test is similar to the PPDT test but the number of pictures is 12 here. While looking at those pictures candidates have to create a story that requires a hero, a challenge or a crisis/problem and how the hero overcame the crisis.

Conduct of PPDT

After the initial briefing, candidates are shown a black and white, hazy picture for 30 seconds. They are then given 4 minutes and 30 seconds to write a story based on the picture.

The candidates are given an answer sheet and are required to give the following details in the box on the left side:

  1. Number of persons
  2. Their Gender
  3. Their Age
  4. Their Mood

How to Write PPDT Story in AFSB

NARRATION

Each individual is given a minute to narrate his/her story, make sure that you give your best as this is the task which exposes you directly in front of the assessors.

GROUP DISCUSSION

SSB conduct GDs to find out whether you possess the critical qualities/skills to contribute effectively to the goal accomplishment process.

Group discussions are held as an integral part of the SSB interview process because teamwork and leadership are essential skills for success in the armed forces. In the military, officers are often required to work with and lead small groups of soldiers. The group discussion task is designed to assess a candidate’s ability to do just that. Apart from that, the candidates are evaluated on the basis of their communication skills, knowledge, leadership skills, listening skills, conceptualizing ability, etc.

The purpose of the G.D has is to arrive at one common story. Don’t forget this aspect, Your aim should always be to take the discussion towards this aim of one common story. Therefore, you don’t have to keep pressing on your story.

You don’t have to keep speaking all the time, let it be sufficient, but when you speak you should have a positive tone and you should speak with authority and logic. Address as many participants as possible and do not get centric towards one or two persons. If you don’t speak, you DON’T stand a chance. The noise level and shouting would be high, you have to be smart enough to be heard.

How much time will I get after writing my story PPDT?

The whole picture is visible for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, you get a minute to summarize the important aspects of the picture, and you have 4 minutes to write a story.

Is PPDT easy?

Yes, If you prepare well and have done a lot of PPDT practice tests you will easily be able to crack the PPDT test.
