Career Growth and Promotions

SSC CGL Central Excise Inspectors are recruited under Group B of the CBIC department and after eight years of service, employees are promoted to Group B Gazetted Superintendents.

In chronological order, these positions are followed by Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Joint Commissioner, Additional Commissioner, and Commissioner from Group A Indian Revenue Service Officers. How to Become an Excise Inspector

The Excise Department offers several ways to enter. Through the SSC-conducted CGL exam, one can be hired. Through CGL, one can apply to become a tax assistant, examiner, excise inspector, or preventive officer.

Another way to enter is by taking the UPSC exam. Indian Revenue Services are obtained by passing the UPSC Civil Services Exam.

Quantitative aptitude, Verbal and Nonverbal reasoning, Computer, English based on past year’s questions, and general knowledge are required to pass the SSC CGL exam. The SSC CGL test currently consists of two stages: prelims and mains. Pre is a qualifying exam, however merit is determined by the marks earned in the main exam and the computer section of the main exam.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality/Citizenship- Indian national or Bhutan/Nepal national or Tibetan refugee (individuals arriving in India before January 1, 1962, to relocate there permanently)
  • Age limit- 18–30 years
  • Education Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited college.
  • Number of Attempts- No limits.

Application Form

Candidates must first complete the SSC CGL application form available on the Commission’s official website, ssc.nic.in. The SSC online form can be completed by candidates in two steps: registration and application.

Candidates do not need to re-fill the registration form if they are already enrolled on the official website. The application fee for SSC CGL 2024 was INR 100.

The candidates’ application status is made public on SSC regional websites, informing candidates whether their SSC CGL application was accepted or denied. To find out their exam date, candidates must check the status of their applications.

Selection Process

There are two stages to the SSC CGL selection process: Tier 1 and Tier 2. The following lists the specifics of every level for the Inspector (Excise) position:

  • All applicants who plan to take the SSC CGL exam must take the Tier 1 exam.
    Candidates for excise inspector should only show up for Paper I, which consists of three portions, in the Tier 2 test.
