How to Solve Previous Year Question Papers Effectively?
For the SSC CGL Exam conducted by the Commission, follow these clear steps to get maximum benefit from previous year papers:
Step 1: Complete the Syllabus First (Finish the basic syllabus of Quant, Reasoning, English, and General Awareness)
Step 2: Set a 60-Minute Timer (Attempt the paper like a real exam)
Step 3: Attempt sections in this order to save time (English → Reasoning → Quant → General Awareness)
Step 4: Check Your Answers After Finishing
Step 5: Analyse Your Mistakes Deeply
Step 6: Identify Repeated Topics
Step 7: Write down the facts and formulas that you have newly discovered and maintain notes for quick revision.
Track these 5 Metrics While Solving SSC CGL PYQs
Solving the paper is not enough. The full use of PYQs can only be derived if following parameters are being assessed:
Accuracy Rate: Correct answers ÷ questions attempted. If you’re attempting 20 Quant questions and getting 12 right (60% accuracy) then this is not an ideal situation. Revising concepts and work on 90% accuracy levels.
Time Per Question: Aim for 35 – 40 seconds per question on average. If a single DI question is taking 2 minutes and you still get it wrong, that time is better spent on two easier questions elsewhere.
Identify Topic-wise Weak Areas: Don’t just check your overall score. See how you perform in individual topics like Arithmetic, Algebra, Cloze Test, Reading Comprehension, etc. Spend more time on topics where your accuracy is low.
Analyse Performance by Difficulty Level: Check how many easy, moderate, and difficult questions you answer correctly.
Maintain Consistency: Try to score consistently on every previous-year paper. If your marks vary a lot from one paper to another, focus on improving your consistency so that you can perform confidently in the actual exam.
