SSC GD 2026 Medical Rules Revised: BMI Mandatory, Major Relief for Candidates

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released an important corrigendum regarding the SSC GD 2026 recruitment, revising the Uniform Guidelines for Medical Examination applicable for recruitment in CAPFs, SSF, and Assam Rifles. As per the new SSC GD 2026 Medical Rules, the medical guidelines related to weight and BMI for candidates appearing in the examination have been revised.

Candidates preparing for SSC GD 2026 must understand the revised medical rules, BMI norms, and their impact on selection. Read here for more details.

As per these new rules, the Physical Standard Test (PST) board will continue to measure and record height, weight, and chest for all candidate categories. However, the board does not have the power to reject or disqualify any candidate solely on the basis of weight. This is a significant relief for many aspirants. The weight of a candidate will be measured and recorded by the Medical Officer at the time of the Medical Examination Test(MET). Instead of just checking for weight, the medical officer will now calculate a candidate’s Body Mass Index(BMI), which accounts for a candidate’s height as well.

Major Relief for SSC GD Candidates

Earlier, candidates were often concerned about disqualification during PST due to weight measurements. Now, SSC has clarified:

  • PST Board will measure and record height, weight, and chest.
  • PST Board cannot reject any candidate due to weight.
  • Medical Officer will assess weight only during MET.
  • Final consideration will be based on BMI, not merely weight.

SSC GD 2026 Medical Rules: BMI

Instead of just looking at your weight in kilograms, the Medical Officer will now calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI is calculated as follows:

BMI Formula:   BMI = Weight (in kg) ÷ [Height (in metres)]²

Acceptable BMI range: 18 to 25

A candidate’s BMI must fall within the normal range of 18 to 25 to be considered medically fit with respect to weight.

Why is this a relief for candidates?

The PST Board, which conducts physical tests, can no longer reject you for weight. Only the Medical Officer can do so, and only after calculating your BMI during the MET. This change ensures a more scientific and consistent approach across all CAPF and Assam Rifles recruitment processes.

SSC GD 2026 Medical Standards Candidates Must Note

Candidates should keep the following in mind:

  1. Since BMI 18-25 is mandatory, aspirants should maintain weight proportionate to height.
  2. Meeting PET/PST standards alone is not enough. Medical standards remain crucial.
  3. Candidates close to underweight or overweight categories should monitor BMI beforehand.
  4. Medical examination will now play a more important role in final qualification.

FAQs

Can the PST Board reject me if my weight is too high or too low?

No. As per the revised guidelines, the PST Board will not reject or disqualify any candidate on the basis of weight. Only the Medical Officer has this authority, and only after calculating BMI during the MET.

What is the acceptable BMI for SSC GD 2026?

The acceptable BMI range is 18 to 25. Candidates with a BMI below 18 will be considered underweight, and those above 25 will be considered overweight. Both will be rejected during the Medical Examination.

How do I calculate my BMI?

Divide your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. For example, if you weigh 65 kg and are 1.70 metres tall, your BMI = 65 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 65 ÷ 2.89 ≈ 22.5, which falls within the acceptable range.

Who will measure my weight during the SSC GD 2026 selection process?

Your height, weight, and chest will first be measured by the PST Board. However, weight will be measured again and recorded by the Medical Officer at the time of the Medical Examination Test (MET), and that reading will be used for BMI calculation.
