Pitch Black Exercise 2022 Multi Lateral Exercise: All You Need to Know

A contingent of the Indian Air Force (IAF) reached Australia to participate in a biennial Exercise Pitch Black. A total 17 countries including India will be participating in this exercise focusing on advancing their air-to-air refuelling capabilities. Exercise Pitch Black 2022 is hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and is scheduled to be conducted from the 19th of August to September 8.

The contingent of India is led by Group Captain YPS Negi which is consisted of around 100 air warriors, four Sukhoi-30 MKI fighters and 2 C-17 transport aircraft. As per the official statement of IAF, They will undertake multi-domain, air-combat missions in a complex environment and will exchange best practices with the participating air forces.

Pitch Black Exercise 2022

A press statement from Australia’s Department of Defence quoted the exercise commander, Air Commodore Tim Alsop, as saying, “Pitch Black is a large force-employment exercise driven by fighter combat scenarios. This year, significant efforts have been made to advance the air-to-air refuelling capability between many of the participating nations.” The exercise includes both day and night operations. “Air-to-air refuelling is a force multiplier, providing essential reach to our combat aircraft. Working with many of the participating nations aims to increase our force projection and maximise our capability,” Air Commodore Alsop added. He also said the return of the Exercise Pitch Black “marked an excellent opportunity to strengthen partnerships and to promote regional stability”.

About Pitch Black Exercise

This exercise is conducted twice a year with the aim of enhancing interoperability and strengthening relationships among participants. Countries exchange information and techniques with each other to perform better in a dynamic warfare environment.

The aim of this exercise is to give the experience to Air warriors, working with various aircraft and systems in the environment of northern Australia that would otherwise be unfamiliar.

This year it is hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and The participants nations this year are Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, India, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, UAE, the U.K, and the U.S.
