India celebrates 31st October as National Unity Day every year as it marks the birth anniversary of the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who played an enormous role in shaping Indian History before and after Independence. He was a lawyer and a member of the Indian National Congress and also the first Deputy Prime Minister of India. later on, he became the first Home Minister of India. He is known for his mindful tactics due to which India could peacefully integrate into a union from disintegrated 565 self-governing princely states through political unification of India.

Sardar Patel received the title of Sardar due to his important role played in the peasant movement in Bardoli and Kheda in Gujarat in 1947 and 1949 respectively.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that 31 October will be celebrated as National Unity Day in remembrance of Sardar Patel and for the first time the day was celebrated in 2014 with the theme of Run for Unity. The main reason behind this celebration is to strengthen the unity of the nation and spread awareness about the contribution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to history.

The day was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. This year (2022) marks the 147th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The reason behind the celebration of this day is to make people aware of the ideas of promoting harmony and unity in society.

It is celebrated across the nation with the idea of promoting “Unity in Diversity”. Even an award is dedicated to Rashtriya Ekta Diwas to inspire the nation with the contributions made by individuals for the country.

The Statue of Unity has been established in 2018 as the world’s largest 182-meters statue of Sardar Patel to honour his contribution to the nation. It is located on the Narmada River in the Kevadiya colony facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Vadodara city of Gujarat. The statue was designed by Indian sculptor Ram V. Sutar.

The Statue of Unity has been recognized by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as one of the 8 wonders of the world in January 2020, that is, it has been called the eighth wonder. We are celebrating 31 October 2022 as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas 2022.
