List of Padma Awards

The Padma Award is one of the highest civilian honours bestowed by the government of India. They were instituted in 1954 to recognize exceptional contributions and achievements in various fields including art, literature, science, sports, medicine, social work, public service, and others.

The Padma Awards consist of three categories – Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.

  • Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service
  • Padma Bhushan for distinguished service,
  • Padma Shri for distinguished service in various fields.
  • These awards are announced on the eve of Republic Day every year.
  • These Awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/ April every year.

The process of selecting the awardees is rigorous and involves a nomination process by the public, which is then reviewed by a committee of experts. The final decision is made by the President of India.

Over the years, the Padma Awards have been conferred upon many eminent personalities from different walks of life, including scientists, artists, sportspeople, social workers, and public servants. Some of the most notable awardees include Sachin Tendulkar, Ratan Tata, M.S. Subbulakshmi, Lata Mangeshkar, Mother Teresa, APJ Abdul Kalam, Amartya Sen, and Pranab Mukherjee, among many others.

The Padma Awards are not only a recognition of individual achievements but also serve as an inspiration for others to work towards excellence in their respective fields. They are a testament to the rich cultural and social diversity of India and the contributions of its citizens to the country’s growth and development.
