Indian Air Force’s ‘Make in India’ Push

Under the leadership of Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari, the Indian Air Force is wholeheartedly backing the government’s ‘Make in India’ drive, specifically within the Defence sector. The IAF has outlined an ambitious roadmap for the next five years, intending to undertake projects valued at more than Rs 3 lakh crore. These initiatives are strategically designed to significantly enhance indigenization, ensuring a substantial reinvestment of funds into the Indian economy.

Key Projects Of IAF

Here are some of the key indigenous projects that the IAF is working on:

  • 180 Light Combat Aircraft Mark 1A: This project, estimated to be worth over Rs 1.2 lakh crore, is expected to have a significant impact on the development of a domestic fighter aircraft manufacturing ecosystem.
  • Su-30MKI fighter jet upgrade: This indigenous upgrade will involve joint efforts by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and the IAF to equip the planes with indigenous radars, avionics, and weapons. The project is expected to cost over Rs 60,000 crore and will cover around 250 aircraft.
  • Airborne Early and Control Aircraft: The IAF is developing a spy plane capable of monitoring enemy activity efficiently. The Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) aircraft will enhance battlefield transparency and situational awareness for the IAF.
  • 156 light combat helicopters: The IAF is leading the acquisition of 156 light combat helicopters, with an approximate expenditure of Rs 45,000 crore.
  • Project Kusha: The IAF is advancing its long-range air defense systems, having obtained approval to develop an indigenous S-400 air defense system. The program will be fully supported by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The IAF’s focus on indigenization will help to reduce its dependence on foreign imports and make it more self-sufficient in terms of its defense needs. It will also boost the Indian economy by creating jobs and stimulating growth in the domestic defense industry.
