GDS Recruitment 2026: Post Names

The recruitment covers three categories of GDS posts:

  • Branch Postmaster (BPM): Overall in-charge of a Branch Post Office, responsible for day-to-day postal operations, IPPB services, and mail conveyance/delivery in single-handed offices.
  • Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM): Assists the BPM with postal operations, sale of stamps/stationery, mail delivery, and IPPB transactions.

GDS Vacancy Eligibility

Candidates must fulfil the prescribed eligibility requirements, including educational qualification, age limit, and local language proficiency, as mentioned in the official notification.

Age Limit

Candidate must be in the age of 18 to 40 years, as of the last date of application submission. The relaxation to reserved categories is provided below.

Educational Qualification

Must have passed in Secondary School Examination (10th standard) with passing marks in Mathematics and English, from a board recognised by the Central/State Government or a Union Territory. Candidates must also have studied the prescribed local language up to 10th standard (state/circle-wise local language list is specified in the notification).

Other Requirements

Basic knowledge of computers, ability to ride a cycle, and an adequate independent source of livelihood besides the GDS allowance.

GDS State Preference & Local Language Requirement

Preference is given to candidates from the same postal circle/state where Class 10 was completed. Studying the local language up to Class 10 is mandatory, and a lack of proficiency may lead to rejection during document verification.

India Post GDS Selection Process 2026

Selection for GDS, ABPM, and BPM posts is based only on Class 10 marks.

  • No written exam or interview
  • Selection based solely on Class 10 marks

In case of a tie in merit, preference is decided using a fixed priority order based on date of birth (older candidates preferred) and category/gender combinations, as defined by the Department.

Shortlisted candidates are then called for physical verification of documents at the concerned Divisional/Unit Head office, followed by pre-engagement formalities including a 3-day basic training.

  2. Complete One-Time Registration (OTR) using a valid mobile number and email ID (each can be used for only one registration)
  3. Log in using the generated Registration Number and password
  4. Fill in personal details, educational (10th standard) details, and select your preferred Division and post(s)
  5. Upload photograph (JPG/JPEG, 30–100 KB) and signature (JPG/JPEG, 20–100 KB) as per prescribed specifications
  6. Preview the application and make corrections if needed
  7. Pay the application fee, if applicable, and submit
