About India Post Posts

The recruitment covers three categories of GDS posts:

• Branch Postmaster (BPM): Overall in-charge of a Branch Post Office, responsible for day-to-day postal operations, IPPB services, and mail conveyance/delivery in single-handed offices.
• Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM): Assists the BPM with postal operations, sale of stamps/stationery, mail delivery, and IPPB transactions.
• Dak Sevak: Engaged in Post Offices, Sorting Offices, Mail Offices, or Delivery Centres, handling mail, parcels, and related duties.

Who is eligible for India Post Recruitment 2026?

To be eligible for the recruitment, candidates need to meet the prescribed educational qualification, age limit, and local language requirements as specified in the official notification.

Age Limit

Candidates must be between 18 and 40 years of age as of the application deadline. However, candidates from reserved categories will receive age relaxation as per the applicable rules.

Educational Qualification

For educational qualification, candidates must have passed Class 10th from a recognised Central, State, or Union Territory board, with Mathematics and English as passing subjects. They should also have studied the required local language up to Class 10th, as specified for the respective postal circle.

Other Requirements

Basic knowledge of computers, ability to cycle, and an adequate independent source of livelihood besides the GDS allowance.

GDS State Preference & Local Language Requirement

Applicants who completed Class 10 from the concerned postal circle or state are generally preferred. Knowledge of the local language studied up to Class 10 is compulsory, and failure to meet the language requirement can result in rejection at the document verification stage.

How to Apply for India Post GDS 2026 Step-by-Step

2. Complete One-Time Registration (OTR) using a valid mobile number and email ID (each can be used for only one registration)
3. Log in using the generated Registration Number and password
4. Fill in personal details, educational (10th standard) details, and select your preferred Division and post(s)
5. Upload photograph (JPG/JPEG, 30–100 KB) and signature (JPG/JPEG, 20–100 KB) as per prescribed specifications
6. Preview the application and make corrections if needed
7. Pay the application fee, if applicable, and submit

If multiple candidates secure the same merit position, the tie is resolved according to the priority rules set by the Department, considering factors such as date of birth and category or gender.

Candidates selected in the merit list are subsequently required to undergo physical document verification at the respective Divisional or Unit Head Office. After verification, they complete the required pre-engagement formalities, including three days of basic training.

How is the India Post GDS Merit List Prepared?

The India Post GDS Merit List is prepared based on candidates’ Class 10 marks/grades. There is no written examination for GDS recruitment. Selection depends on 10th marks, category-wise reservation, available vacancies, post preferences, and document verification. Candidates with higher marks generally have better chances of selection.

Does India Post release multiple merit lists?

Yes. India Post GDS recruitment is selection-based, not exam-based; candidates are shortlisted purely on their 10th/Matric marks, with no written test or interview. Because of this, India Post releases the result in multiple rounds of merit lists rather than one final list.

The merit list is prepared as per the marks obtained by the candidates in 10th standard and some other skills like knowledge of regional language, etc.

Calculation of India Post GDS Marks:

1. Passing all subjects as per approved board norms is mandatory.
2. For candidates with marks or marks and Grades/Points in their 10th standard mark sheet, the total marks are calculated by considering all compulsory and elective/optional subjects (excluding extra subjects) to prioritize those with higher marks.
3. For candidates with only Grades, marks for each subject (compulsory and elective, excluding extra subjects) are calculated using a multiplication factor of 9.5.
