Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Civil Services exam each year in three phases- Prelims, Mains and Interview. Candidates who qualify UPSC Prelims are invited for writing UPSC Mains examination and candidates who qualify Mains are asked to appear in the Interview. UPSC Prepares a list of selected candidates based on the Mains and Interview marks of appearing candidates.

Essay Paper in UPSC Mains Examination consists of 250 marks (out of 1750). The importance of the essay paper is not due to its weightage in the total marking scheme of the UPSC Mains examination, rather due to its mark fetching potential for the aspirants. Aspirants, in the past, have secured as many as 174 marks in the essay paper. This is sometimes more than two GS Paper marks combined of aspirants. Another good thing about Essay Paper is that it won’t take much of your time to prepare for this paper.
In this context, we are going to suggest few steps to boost your marks in the Essay Paper of the UPSC CSE Mains 2021 Examination. These are-
Aspirants often ignore essay paper as they think they can easily write them. Surely, they are right but only able to write an essay is not the goal here, rather it should be to secure the maximum possible marks in the essay paper. With a little bit of dedicated preparation, aspirants can easily secure good marks in the essay paper.
The essay paper in the UPSC Mains exam consists of two sections with four essay questions in each. Aspirants have to attempt one essay from each section (a total of two). Essays of one section are often based on social, economic and political issues and in the second section essays have a philosophical tone. Aspirants must prepare a list of probable topics from each section and prepare accordingly in order to secure good marks.
After preparing a list of essays from each section, aspirants must write a few from each category of essays in order to have a better understanding. Answer writing on 1-2 Essays from each section would be enough for having a better understanding of the topics.
Facts, Quotes and Anecdotes play a very important role in enriching the essay answers. Aspirants must prepare short notes of quotes for each section-philosophical, social issues, political and security issues. etc. For example, aspirants must have few facts on women, education, marginalized class-related information written in a crisp manner. Similarly, quotes should also be written and memorized before the exam, so that aspirants can use them wherever required.
