The HPCS HCS prelims exam includes two objective-type question papers: General Studies and CSAT. Paper I: English and English Essay

The purpose of this paper is to assess the candidate’s ability to read and comprehend significant discursive writing and communicate their thoughts clearly and accurately in English. The pattern of questions would be broadly as follows:

Essay

Candidates will be required to write an essay on a particular topic from the choice of subjects that will be given. They will be expected to be in line with the subject of the essay and arrange their ideas in a structured order and concisely.

Paper-II: Hindi and Hindi Essay in Devnagri script

• Translation of an English passage into Hindi.
• Letter/Precis writing.
• Explanation of Hindi passage (prose and poetry) in the same language.

The nature and standard questions in these papers will be such that a well-educated person will be able to answer them without any specialized study. Part-I

• History of Modern India and Indian Culture – The History of Modern India includes questions on important personalities who shaped the direction of the freedom movement and social reforms. The part relating to Indian Culture‘ will cover all aspects of Indian culture from ancient to modern times.
• Geography of India – In this part, questions will be on the physical, economic, and social geography of India.
• Indian Polity – Questions on the Constitution of India, the Political system, and related matters.
• Current National Issues and Topics of Social Relevance – This part is intended to test the candidate’s awareness of current national issues and topics of social relevance in present-day India, such as the: Demography and Human Resources and related issues. Behavioural and social issues and social welfare problems, such as child labor, gender equality, adult literacy, rehabilitation of the handicapped and other deprived segments of society, drug abuse, public health, etc. Law enforcement issues, human rights, corruption in public life, communal harmony, etc. Internal Security and related issues. • India and the World – This part is intended to test the candidate’s awareness of India’s relationship with the world in various spheres, such as the following:- Foreign Affairs External Security, and related matters. Nuclear Policy. Indian abroad.
• Indian Economy – Questions will be on the planning and economic development in India, economic and trade issues foreign trade, the role and functions of I.M.F. World Bank, W.T.O., etc.
• International Affairs and Institutions – This part will include questions on important events in world affairs and on international institutions.
• Developments in the field of science and technology, communications, and space – In this part, questions will test the candidate’s awareness of the developments in the field of science and technology.
• Statistical analysis, graphs, and diagrams – This part will include exercises to test the candidate’s ability to draw common sense conclusions from information presented in a statistical, graphical, or diagrammatical form and to point out deficiencies, limitations, or inconsistencies therein.

The candidates should select only one optional subject out of the 29 optional subjects given below, in which they want to appear in the HPSC HCS Mains 2023 at the time of filling out the HPSC HCS Application form 2023. HPSC HCS Exam Pattern 2024

The HPSC HCS Exam 2024 follows a two-stage selection process. The first stage is a preliminary exam with objective questions on General Studies, including Haryana-specific topics, and a separate paper on Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). Both papers are qualifying only. Mains exams, for those who clear the Prelims, are descriptive with answer writing. Here, candidates answer five papers: English, Hindi, General Studies, and two optional subjects.

HPSC HCS Prelims Exam Pattern

The Prelims exam marks the initial phase of the Haryana Civil Service selection process. It consists of two papers: General Studies and CSAT, each carrying 100 marks. General Studies evaluates knowledge in history, polity, economy, environment, etc., while CSAT assesses logical reasoning, decision-making, and data interpretation skills.

Each paper has a duration of 2 hours, and passing both paper is necessary to proceed to the Mains stage. Prelims serve as a qualifying exam, and scores are not included in the final merit list. Candidates must attain the minimum qualifying marks set by HPSC in Prelims to advance to the next round.
