Why Kashi Tamil Sangamam is in News?

  • The ‘Kashi Tamil Sangamam’ programme will be held in Varanasi between November 16 and December 19.
  • It will include interactive sessions, debates and seminars on the ancient and traditional links between the two cultures.

What is Kashi Tamil Sangamam?

  • Kashi Tamil Sangamam is an initiative by the Government of India as a part of “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” and to uphold the Spirit of “Ek Bharat Shreshta Bharat”

Historical Link between Kashi and Tamil Culture

  • Varanasi, known popularly as Kashi in Tamil Nadu, is one of the oldest living cities of the world, endowed with a civilizational and cultural continuum that is unparalleled.
  • Knowledge, philosophy, culture, devotion to Gods, literature, Indian arts and crafts have all flourished in this holy city.
  • Tamil Nadu on the other hand is another cradle of culture, arts, crafts, literature, with a wealth of knowledge available in Tamil language, which is the most ancient language in the world.
  • What is more important is the fact that these two manifestations of Indian Culture, though geographically distant, have had deep and vibrant links over centuries.
  • Knowledge seekers from near and far used to come to Kashi, and places in and around like Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, which are internally connected as Knowledge Hubs.
  • Similarly, in Tamil Nadu, places like Kanchipuram, Puducherry, Madurai, Thanjavur, Rameshwaram, Srirangam, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tamraparani River have been excellent knowledge centres/ Ghatikasthanas and have contributed for various ancient industries like shipbuilding, pottery, weaving, idol making, river dams, mining, warfare, weaponry etc.
  • The ancient connect between the two centres of knowledge is evident in many walks of life like similar themes in literature, presence of the name of Kashi in every village in Tamil Nadu etc.
  • Many household in Tamilnadu adopted the name of Kailasanatha and Kashinatha for naming their children, like those who are living in Kashi and Uttar Pradesh.
  • Hence exploring and rediscovering the links between these two centres can lead to the creation of important bodies of knowledge both in the intellectual and practical realms.

 

 

Outbreak of Measles

 

Why in News?

  • The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has deputed a high-level multi-disciplinary team to Mumbai to take stock of the upsurge of Measles cases in the city.

The task of the centre team against measles

The team will undertake field visits to investigate the outbreak and assist the State Health Departments in terms of public health measures, management guidelines and protocols to manage the increasing cases.

Know about Measles

  • Measles is an acute viral respiratory illness.
  • It is characterized by a prodrome of fever (as high as 105°F) and malaise, cough, coryza, and conjunctivitis -the three “C”s -, a pathognomonic enanthema (Koplik spots) followed by a maculopapular rash.
  • The rash usually appears about 14 days after a person is exposed.

The Measles virus

  • Measles is caused by a single-stranded, enveloped RNA virus with 1 serotype.
  • It is classified as a member of the genus Morbillivirus in the Paramyxoviridae family. Humans are the only natural hosts of measles virus.

 

Justice D Y Chandrachud

 

Why in News?

Justice D Y Chandrachud has taken oath as 50th CJI.

Background of Justice D Y Chandrachud

  • Born in 1959, Justice Chandrachud was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of India in May 2016.
  • Earlier, he served as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
  • He had completed his LLB  from Delhi University and obtained an LLM degree and a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences from Harvard Law School in the USA.

 

Electoral Bonds

 

Why Electoral Bonds in News?

 

The Government of India has approved the issuance of the 23rd tranche of electoral bonds for sale from November 9-15 following an amendment.

What is the Electoral Bond Scheme 2018?

  • The provisions of the Electoral Bond Scheme 2018 mandate, electoral bonds may be purchased by a person, who is a citizen of India or incorporated or established in India. A person being an individual can buy electoral bonds either singly or jointly with other individuals.
  • Only the political parties registered under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 (43 of 1951) and which secured not less than one percent of the votes polled in the last general election to the house of the people or the legislative assembly of the state, shall be eligible to receive the electoral bonds.
  • The electoral bonds shall be encashed by an eligible political party only through a bank account with the authorised bank.
  • Electoral bonds are pitched as an alternative to cash donations made to political parties, and it intends to cleanse the system of political funding in the system.
  • Electoral bonds are generally open for the sale between 1-10 of a designated month.
  • The last tranche of electoral bond sales were made between October 1-10, 2022. It was the 22nd phase of sale of electoral bonds.
