In a collaborative effort with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has achieved a significant milestone by creating a Certified Reference Material (CRM) for Bauxite.

• This CRM has been given the name BARC B1201.
• National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) is a Navratna CPSE under the Ministry of Mines and a prominent manufacturer and exporter of alumina and aluminium in India.

The development of BARC B1201 marks a significant achievement as it is India’s first-ever Certified Reference Material (CRM) for Bauxite and the fifth of its kind globally.

• Through the partnership with BARC, NALCO has successfully produced a distinctive product that is essential for our research laboratories.
• This accomplishment is likely to motivate researchers towards more innovation and will also contribute to the noble goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat and the Make in India initiative by adding value to the nation’s technological capabilities.

Significance of 1st Bauxite CRM

It is worth highlighting that the new product developed by NALCO and BARC will serve as a viable substitute for imports and can be utilized by industries, research laboratories, and academic institutions as a calibration standard. Konkan Maritime Exercise 2023 is an annual bilateral maritime exercise conducted in the Arabian Sea off the Konkan coast. It is conducted between the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom.

• The Konkan 2023 exercise saw the participation of INS Trishul, a guided missile frigate, and HMS Lancaster, a Type 23 guided missile frigate, which engaged in various maritime drills to improve interoperability and learn from each other’s best practices.
• The exercises encompassed all aspects of maritime operations, including air, surface, and sub-surface domains, and comprised activities such as-
  • Gunnery shoots on a surface inflatable target known as the “Killer Tomato,”
  • Helicopter operations,
  • Anti-air and anti-submarine warfare exercises,
  • Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS),
  • Ship manoeuvres, and
