Why Guruvayur Kesavan in news?

  • Today is Guruvayur Ekadasi, one of the holiest days in the Hindu calendar, especially in Kerala, more particularly in Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple.
  • Apart from that, this is the day when the famous elephant Gajarajan Guruvayur Kesavan died — on Dec 2, 1976 (the Ekadasi day that year).

Who was Guruvayur Kesavan?

  • One of the most famous elephant serving Lord Guruvayur was Keshavan, also know as Gajaräja, or “king of the elephants”.
  • In January 1922, Valiya Raja (King) of Nilambur offered one of his 12 elephants to Lord Guruvayurappa, as a fulfillment of his vow when he got back his entire property intact at the time of the Malabar Mutiny.
  • Guruvayur Kesavan  was very sincere, who never harmed anyone and an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna.

  • Guruvayur Devaswom is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Guruvayurappan located in the small town of Guruvayur – Kerala
  • The presiding deity in the Garbhagraha (central shrine) is Mahavishnu, worshipped according to the pooja routines laid down by Adi Sankaracharya and later written in to the Tantrasamuchaya by Chennas Narayanan Namboodiri (born in 1427).

Why ‘Dhabari Quruvi’  in news?

  • ‘Dhabari Quruvi’ is the first feature film in the history of Indian cinema to only star indigenous people.
  • The movie had its world premiere in the Indian Panorama section on November 25 at the 53rd International Film Festival of India in Goa.

About Dhabari Quruvi

  • ‘Dhabari Quruvi’ is the journey of a tribal girl who battles convention and seeks to free herself from the chains of society and community that have tied down those like her.
  • It is distinguished as the first film in the history of Indian cinema to star only people from indigenous communities.
  • Further, the film has only been shot in the tribal language of Irula.
  • The script was first drafted in Malayalam and later translated into Irula.

Namda Craft

 

Why in news?

The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 3.0 and its ‘Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)’ component for upskilling of artisans and weavers of Kashmir is tremendously helping in preserving and revival of Namda craft of Kashmir.

Know about Namda Craft

  • Namda is a rug made of sheep wool through felting technique instead of normal weaving process.
  • Namda is made by enmeshing wool fibers with water, soap and pressure and then embroidering the resultant fabric.
  • These are extensively used in Kashmiri households as an effective and inexpensive floor covering and mattress.
  • The woolen rugs, namdas and gabbas are made of wool to provide warmth to the occupants.
  • Felting the wool rather than weaving it, makes the most striking characteristic of this craft. Low quality wool mixed with a small quantity of cotton is used to manufacture namdas. They are usually of two types, plain and embroidered.

  • Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) is the flagship scheme of the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) implemented by National Skill Development Corporation.
  • The objective of this Skill Certification Scheme is to enable a large number of Indian youth to take up industry-relevant skill training that will help them in securing a better livelihood.
  • Individuals with prior learning experience or skills will also be assessed and certified under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
  • Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 3.0:
    • Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 3.0, was launched in 2021, in a bid to empower India’s youth with employable skills by making over 300 skill courses available to them.

Why Sylhet-Silchar Festival 2022 in news?

  • The first Sylhet-Silchar Festival celebrating the close cultural ties between the neighbouring regions of India and Bangladesh has begun in Assam’s Barak Valley on December 02, 2022.
  • It is being organised by India Foundation under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Culture in association with the Bangladesh Foundation for Regional Studies.

Why Sylhet-Silchar Festival 2022?

  • After the partition in 1947, the Sylhet district with majority of Muslim people of Assam became part of East Pakistan and is currently a part of Bangladesh.
  • So, the aim of the festival is to revisit the common values and shared heritage of the twin cities and their people separated by international borders.
  • The event in the city will showcase the cuisine, arts, crafts, culture and local produce of the two regions which share close cultural ties.
  • Eminent people from both sides will discuss issues of mutual interest.
