Why Hornbill Festival in news

Nagaland is all set to host the 23rd Hornbill Festival 2022 at Naga Heritage Village Kisama from December 1 to 10.

Know about Hornbill Festival

  • To encourage inter-tribal interaction and to promote cultural heritage of Nagaland, the Government of Nagaland organizes the Hornbill Festival every year in the first week of December.
  • It is also called the ‘Festival of Festivals”.
  • The Festival is named after the hornbill, the globally respected bird and which is displayed in folklore in most of the state’s tribes.
  • Organized by the State Tourism and Art & Culture Departments, Hornbill Festival showcases a mélange of cultural displays under one roof.
  • This festival usually takes place between the 1st and the 10th of December every year in Kohima. The much popular Music festival is held alongside.
  • Hornbill Festival is held at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama which is about 12 km from Kohima. All the tribes of Nagaland take part in this festival.
  • The aim of the festival is to revive and protect the rich culture of Nagaland and display its extravaganza and traditions.
  • For visitors it means a closer understanding of the people and culture of Nagaland. It must be included in your itinerary, if you are visiting Nagaland during that time to enjoy the food, songs, dances and customs of Nagaland.

Jiang Zemin

 

Why in news?

Former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin, who led China after the Tiananmen massacre in 1989 and was the first Chinese head of state to visit India in 1996, passed away in Shanghai.

Who was Jiang Zemin?

  • Jiang served as CPC general-secretary from 1989 to 2002; chairman of the powerful Central Military Commission – which oversees the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) — from 1989 to 2004; and president between 1993 and 2003.
  • Jiang, in 1996, became the first Chinese head of state to visit India since the CPC came to power in China in 1949.

Jiang Zemin’s Economic Reforms

  • Jiang Zemin presided over a golden time for economic reforms.
  • Jiang Zemin’s economic focus was to create a stable economy and address issues of unemployment and stagflation. To do this, he took the previous regime’s reforms to their logical end, fully opening up China to the world.
  • It is under his leadership that the Chinese manufacturing sector became the global behemoth that it is today: he felt that it is only through the integration of China into global networks of trade and commerce that its domestic economy could be boosted.
  • Reforms he made would start China on its road to becoming an economic superpower.
  • He won China its inclusion into the World Trade Organisation in 2001 after years of negotiation.

“Three Represents’ theory

  • He got written his Three Represents’ theory into the constitution of the Chinese Communist Party(CCP).
  • According to this theory, he modernized the party and the communist movement.
  • He moved beyond a political base of workers and the peasantry, and wooed intellectuals and the newly emerging business class.
  • The theory articulated a vision for the relationship between the party and the people.
  • Among other things, it allowed ‘capitalists’ to join the CCP “as long as they participated in honest labour.”

Exercise Yudh Abhyas

 

Why in news?

  • The 18th edition of the India-US joint military exercise ‘Yudh Abhyas’ is currently underway in Uttarakhand, about 100 km from the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
  • It aims to enhance interoperability and share expertise between both armies in peacekeeping and disaster relief operations

Know about ‘Yudh Abhyas’

  • Labeled as Yudh Abhyas (which loosely translates as war training), the joint exercise is held annually to exchange “best practices, tactics, techniques and procedures between the armies of the two nations”.
  • During the training, the armies are also focusing on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.
  • Troops from both nations practice launching of swift and coordinated relief efforts in the wake of any natural calamity.

RBI’s Retail Digital Rupee Pilot Project

 

Why in news?

Under RBI’s Retail Digital Rupee Pilot Project that starts on December 1, four banks have created a wallet in their mobile banking applications where CBDCs will be available to select customers.

Key features of RBI’s Retail Digital Rupee Pilot Project

  • The central bank has identified eight banks for phase-wise participation in RBI’s Retail Digital Rupee Pilot Project.
  • Only those digital wallets offered by banks participating in the RBI’s digital rupee programme can transact in digital currency.
  • The retail digital rupee will be in the form of a digital token that represents legal tender.
  • The RBI will issue digital currency in the same denominations that paper currency and coins are issued.
  • Retail digital rupee transactions can be carried out through a digital wallet on mobile phones and other devices.
  • The retail digital currency will be distributed through banks. Transactions in digital currency can be carried out between person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M).
  • Payments to merchants can be made using QR (Quick Response) codes displayed at merchant locations.
