2nd India-Nordic Summit in News

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi met H.E. Ms. Sanna Marin, Prime Minister of Finland, in Copenhagen on the sidelines of the 2nd India-Nordic Summit.
    • This was the first in-person meeting between the two leaders.
  • Earlier, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi participated in the 2nd India-Nordic Summit along with other Leaders of the Nordic Countries.

 

India-Nordic Summit

  • About: India-Nordic Summit provides a platform to India and six Nordic Countries for strengthening cooperation between them.
  • Participating Countries: India-Nordic Summit takes place between India and five Nordic Countries- Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Sweden and Norway.
  • Objective: India-Nordic Summit provided an opportunity to review the progress of the India-Nordic relations.
  • First India-Nordic Summit: 1st India-Nordic Summit was held in 2018 in Stockholm.
    • In the 1st India-Nordic Summit, discussions were held on multilateral cooperation in post-pandemic economic recovery, climate change, sustainable development, innovation, digitalization, and green and clean growth.

2nd India-Nordic Summit

  • About: The second 2nd India Nordic summit, earlier scheduled to take place in June 2021, has been re-convened.
  • 2nd India-Nordic Summit Venue: The 2nd India-Nordic summit is being hosted by Denmark in Copenhagen.
  • Issues Discussed:
    • Discussions were held on cooperation in the maritime sector with a focus on sustainable ocean management.
    • Prime Minister invited Nordic companies for investing in the Blue Economy sector, especially in India’s Sagarmala project.
    • India’s partnership with the Nordic region in the Arctic Region was discussed. Prime Minister noted that India’s Arctic Policy provides a good framework for the expansion of India-Nordic cooperation in the Arctic region.
    • Prime Minister invited the sovereign wealth funds of the Nordic countries to invest in India.
    • Discussions also took place on regional and global developments.

 

About Nordic Countries

  • About: The Nordic Countries are a group of five countries in northern Europe. These five Nordic countries are Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland.
  • Political System: Denmark, Sweden, and Norway are constitutional monarchies and parliamentary democracies. Finland and Iceland are democratic republics.
    • Iceland’s parliament, the Althing, is the oldest parliament in the world.
  • Population: Sweden is the largest and most populous of the Nordic countries. Iceland is the least populous. Denmark is the smallest.
  • Economic strength: Nordic countries collectively represent an economy of more than $1.6 trillion.
  • India-Nordic Countries Trade Balance: Total bilateral trade in goods and services between India and the Nordic countries is $13 billion.
