In Bihar, the Chief Minister is the top leader in charge of running the state. Although the Governor is the official head of the state, the Chief Minister runs the state’s daily affairs. Since 1946, Bihar has had 23 different Chief Ministers. The first Chief Minister was Sri Krishna Sinha from the Indian National Congress, who served the longest.
Currently, Nitish Kumar serves as the Chief Minister starting his 9th term in January 2024 and Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha are the Deputy Chief Ministers serving in office since 28 January 2024. Nitish Kumar is a key leader of the Janata Dal (United) party and has had a major role in Bihar politics, working with different alliances like the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Mahagathbandhan.
Nitish Kumar becomes CM of Bihar for the 9th Time
Nitish Kumar has become the Chief Minister of Bihar for the ninth time. He leads the BJP-JD(U) government now. He took the oath on January 29, 2024, just after stepping down from the RJD-JD(U) government. This move is a major change in Bihar’s politics as Nitish Kumar ended his partnership with the RJD.

Nitish Kumar, joined by notable figures like Jitan Ram Manjhi, Chirag Paswan, Samrat Chaudhary, and JP Nadda, took the oath amid enthusiastic chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Jai Shree Ram.” This event marks the beginning of a new political era in Bihar.
Deputy Chief Ministers
Apart from Nitish Kumar, Samrat Choudhury and Vijay Kumar Sinha, representing the BJP were sworn in as Deputy Chief Ministers. Kumar highlighted their vital roles as deputies in the newly established government.
Chief Minister of Bihar Before 1946
In the past, Bihar had its administrative centre in Patna, overseeing the regions encompassing present-day Bihar and Jharkhand. Nevertheless, a significant transformation occurred on April 1, 1936, when Bihar and Orissa underwent a division, becoming distinct provinces as per the Government of India Act 1935.
