Suposhit Bharat Initiative: Suposhit Bharat Initiative under Poshan Abhiyan aims to ensure nutritional security in India. Suposhit Bharat Initiative is also important for UPSC Prelims 2023 and UPSC Mains Exam (GS Paper 2- Various government initiative to promote health and Nutrition in India).

Recently, the Minister of Ayush Shri Sarbananda Sonowal in a written reply in Lok Sabha informed about Suposhit Bharat Initiative under Poshan Abhiyan. Mission POSHAN 2.0 including Poshan Abhiyaan has a total financial implication of ₹1,81,703 crores, comprising ₹1,02,031 crore as Central share and ₹79,672 crore as State share.

Suposhit Bharat under Poshan Abhiyan

The Ministry of Ayush is knowledge partner with the Ministry of Women and Child Development in the Poshan Abhiyan to achieve the ultimate goal of ‘SUPOSHIT BHARAT’. It also actively participated in Suposhit Bharat under Poshan Abhiyan program and celebrates Poshan Pakhwada and Poshan Maah every year since year 2018.

  • Suposhit Bharat initiative intends to conceptualize, develop, pilot and scale up food-based nutrition interventions through food services at institutional food services’ level, and street foods, school & college canteens.
  • This will therapeutically address malnutrition and non-communicable diseases in the general population.
  • POSHAN Abhiyaan provides a platform to converge the activities of various stakeholders towards attaining the goal of ‘Suposhit Bharat’.

Ayush Ministry ensuring Kuposhan Mukta Bharat

  • Ministry of Ayush provides technical guidance and support based on the Ayush principles of regional and seasonal variations in the body while considering the local preferences.
  • Ministry of Ayush has developed advisory for preferred food and dietary items to address Kuposhan Mukt Bharat, which include-
    • General dietary advisory,
    • Advisory for pregnant women, lactating mothers, children,
    • Specific recommendations for anaemia in pregnancy and malnourished children
  • Ministry of Ayush has developed four yoga modules for the beneficiaries of Anganwadi Services- yoga module-
    • For children of age 3 to 6 years,
    • For adolescent girls,
    • For pregnant ladies and
    • For lactating mothers.
  • These modules have been provided to all Integrated Child Development Services(ICDS) functionaries and Anganwadi workers for training / further dissemination to the beneficiaries.

POSHAN Abhiyaan 2022

  • POSHAN Abhiyaan is a programmatic approach in addressing the life cycle issues of malnutrition.
    • Reduction of anemia is one of the important objectives of the POSHAN Abhiyaan in convergence with key Ministries/ Departments, mainly Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoH&FW).
    • A range of efforts are underway to improve the integration of nutrition interventions into the existing health platforms through various strategic measures.
  • Under POSHAN Abhiyaan, efforts are also being made to-
    • Strengthen processes for community engagement,
    • Empowerment of beneficiaries and
    • Behavioural change towards better nutrition for which the Abhiyaan provides a platform for organizing Community Based Events (CBEs) in Anganwadi Centres.
  • Under Community Based Events, messages related to public health for improvement of nutrition and to reduce illness, prevention of anemia, importance of nutritious food, diet diversity etc. are being conducted.
  • Many States/UTs have developed indigenous best practices like use of iron utensils for cooking to reduce iron deficiency, integrating Ayurveda products and formulations with supplementary nutrition etc.
