Imran Khan No-Trust Vote in News

  • The Pakistan government on Sunday issued a notification announcing that Imran Khan no longer holds the position of Prime Minister of the country.
  • Previously, the President of Pakistan in terms of Article 58(1) read with Article 48(1) of the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, dissolved the Pakistani Parliament.
  • Consequently, Mr. Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi ceased to hold the office of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, with immediate effect.

Imran Khan No-Trust Vote Update

  • No trust vote in Pakistan Parliament: Deputy Speaker (of Pakistan Parliament) Qasim Khan Suri dismissed the no-confidence motion moved by the Opposition against Prime Minister Khan.
    • He termed this No Trust Vote against the Constitution and rules of Pakistan.
    • Suri chaired the crucial session after Opposition parties filed a no-confidence motion against Speaker Asad Qaiser.
  • Opposition Parties and Supreme Court: Opposition parties protested against the president’s decision of dissolving the Pakistani parliament and approached the supreme court of India.
    • The Supreme Court barred all state institutions from taking any “extra-constitutional” steps in the wake of the dismissal of the no-confidence vote in the National Assembly.
    • A three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Umar Ata Bandial heard the matter.
  • Current president of Pakistan: There will be an interim PM of Pakistan. Reports say that Imran Khan will remain PM of Pakistan for the next 15 days.
  • Role of Pakistan Army: Pakistan’s Army said it had “absolutely nothing” to do with the prevailing political situation in the country.

What next in Pakistan’s politics?

  • Elections: if the dissolution of Parliament is upheld, then the election to Pakistan’s parliament is inevitable if democratic norms are followed in Pakistan.
  • If held Unconstitutional: If the President’s decision to dissolve the Pakistani parliament is held unconstitutional, PM Imran Khan has to prove his majority in the Parliament.
    • If he loses No trust vote, then, a new government under the leadership of a new Prime Minister of Pakistan will be formed as per the constitution of Pakistan.
    • If Imran Khan manages to retain the Office of Prime Minister of Pakistan, then
      • either he can serve his remaining term in the office and become the first Prime Minister in Pakistan to complete his term in the long term.
      • Or, he can resign and give way to a fresh election in Pakistan.
