Deaflympics 2022 in News

  • Recently, India’s Deaflympics 2021 contingent received a rousing send-off ahead of embarking for the Games, starting May 1.
  • The 2021 Summer Deaflympics are postponed to 2022 and will take place in Caxias do Sul, Brazil from May 1 to 15, 2022.

India’s Participation in Deaflympics 2022

  • A total of 65 athletes will be participating at the Games in Caxias Du Sul, Brazil, making it the largest and the youngest contingent ever from India to participate in the Deaflympics.
  • Sports Participation: India’s Deaflympics 2021 contingent will participate in a total of 11 sports disciplines-
    • Athletics,
    • Badminton,
    • Judo,
    • Golf,
    • Karate,
    • Shooting,
    • Swimming,
    • Tennis,
    • Table Tennis,
    • Taekwondo and
    • Wrestling
  • Previous Participation: India had sent a delegation of 46 participants in the last Deaflympics in Turkey in 2017, bagging a total of 5 medals, which included 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals.

Summer Deaflympics 2022

  • About: The Deaflympics is an international multi-sport event, organized by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD – International Committee of Sports for the Deaf).
    • The Summer Deaflympics takes place every 4 years and is the oldest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games.
    • The Deaflympics was previously called World Games for the Deaf, and International Games for the Deaf.
    • From 2001, the games have been known by their current name Deaflympics.
  • First Deaflympics: The first edition, held in Paris in 1924, was also the first sporting event for people with special needs.
  • Participation: For the 24th summer edition, it is expected to receive 4,500 deaf athletes and teams from over 100 countries.
  • Host Country: As a historical landmark, Brazil will be the First Country in Latin America to host the Summer Deaflympic Games.
  • Exceptions: The only exceptions in the history of Deaflympics were the cancellation of the 1943 and 1947 Games because of World War II.
