India- Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment in News

Recently, 6th India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment (MDTI) co-chaired by Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, and Hon’ble Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, Government of Canada.

6th India- Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment

The 6th India- Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment serves as a bilateral platform that facilitates discussions on various trade and investment-related topics and areas of collaboration, providing an institutionalized mechanism for such interactions.

  • Themes: During the Dialogue, the participants will prioritize several themes, such as-
    • Enhancing the India-Canada bilateral trade relationship,
    • Promoting investment and cooperation,
    • Fostering green transition (including critical minerals discussions), and
    • Exploring new areas of collaboration, such as facilitating business-to-business engagements.
  • Discussion: Additionally, the ministers will assess the progress of India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations.
    • During the previous Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment held in March 2022, the two ministers had initiated the CEPA negotiations with the potential of an interim agreement or Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA).
    • Subsequently, seven rounds of negotiations have taken place.

Indian Pavilion at SIAL CANADA-2023

As part of their visit, the ministers will inaugurate the Indian Pavilion at SIAL CANADA-2023, which is the largest food innovation trade show in North America with the participation of over 1000 exhibitors from 50 countries catering to the needs of the retail, food service, and food processing industries.

  • The Indian business delegation at SIAL Canada will include representatives from the Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI), Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), and the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).
  • Furthermore, a Trade and Investment Promotion Event is scheduled for the Agricultural and Food Processing sector, where Indian companies and Canadian importers will meet on the sidelines of SIAL-2023.
  • This event is expected to be attended by around 200 companies.

ASEAN India Maritime Exercise (AIME-2023)

ASEAN India Maritime Exercise (AIME-2023) in News

Recently, the inaugural ASEAN India Maritime Exercise (AIME-2023) successfully culminated in the South China Sea on 08 May 2023. India’s indigenously designed and built ships- destroyer INS Delhi & stealth frigate INS Satpura, maritime patrol aircraft P8I and integral helicopters exercised with ASEAN naval ships from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

ASEAN India Maritime Exercise (AIME-2023) Details

The ASEAN India Maritime exercise provides a platform for the navies of ASEAN Member States and India to enhance their collaboration, deepen their understanding, and build mutual trust to address common challenges related to maritime security at sea.

  • Host Country: As the country coordinator for ASEAN-India Dialogue Relations between 2021 and 2024, Singapore is co-hosting the ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise.
  • Schedule and Venue: From 02 to 04 May 2023, the Harbour Phase of the ASEAN India Maritime Exercise will take place at Changi Naval Base, followed by the Sea Phase in the South China Sea, scheduled from 07 to 08 May 2023.
  • Significance: The ASEAN India Maritime Exercise 2023 presents a valuable opportunity for the Indian Navy and ASEAN navies to collaborate closely and carry out joint operations seamlessly in the maritime domain.
  • Participation: The ASEAN India Maritime Exercise (AIME-2023) saw participation of approximately 1400 personnel manning nine ships in the Sea Phase of the multilateral naval exercise.

 Project SMART

Project SMART in News

Recently, an MoU was signed between the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), the Ministry of Railways, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the implementation of the ‘Station Area Development along Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail’ project, also known as Project-SMART.

Project SMART by JICA

Project-SMART aims to improve the accessibility and convenience for commuters and other stakeholders while promoting economic activities in the vicinity of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Railway (MAHSR) Stations.

  • The project seeks to enhance the institutional capacity of State Governments, Municipal Corporations, and Urban Development Authorities in planning, developing, and managing the surrounding areas of MAHSR stations.
  • The recently signed MoU pertains to the development of four high-speed rail stations, namely Sabarmati and Surat in Gujarat and Virar and Thane in Maharashtra, out of the 12 stations en route.
  • While Surat, Virar, and Thane are greenfield developments, Sabarmati is a brownfield development.

Seminars on Project SMART

A series of seminars and field visits are being organized by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), along with the governments of Gujarat and Maharashtra and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), for the Project-SMART in Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai.

  • The first seminar of the series was held at Nirman Bhawan, New Delhi on May 8, 2023, which saw the participation of officers from the Japan Embassy, JICA HQ, JICA India Office, JICA experts’ team, the Ministry of Railways, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited, MoHUA, and TCPO.
  • The seminars aim to prepare ‘Station Area Development Plans’ for Sabarmati, Surat, Virar, and Thane HSR Stations and a model handbook that includes the experiences and methodologies adopted in Japan, India, and other countries for Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) and Station Area Development.
  • The deliberations of the seminars are expected to contribute significantly to these objectives.
