Recently, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh informed Rajya Sabha that 22 Nuclear Power Reactors are operational in the country.

  • He also informed that while in the past India’s nuclear installations were mostly confined to South Indian States or in the west in Maharashtra and Gujarat, the present government is also promoting its expansion to other parts of the country.
  • In this context, he cited the example of the upcoming nuclear power plant in Gorakhpur town of Haryana which will become functional in near future.

India’s Nuclear Power capacity witnessed a quantum jump after 2014, when Narendra Modi took over as the Prime Minister.

  • Going by the exact figures, in the year 2013-14 if the annual nuclear power generation stood at 35,333 Million Units, in the latest year of 2021-22 it stands at 47,112 Million Units.
    • This is nearly 30 to 40 percent increase within a short span of over eight and a half years.
  • The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Modi also gave simultaneous bulk approval for as many as 11 indigenous pressurised heavy water reactors in 2017 at a total cost of Rs.1,05,000 crore and total capacity of 7,000 Mega Watts.

Recently, the Minister for Electronics & Information Technology, Communications and Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the ‘Digital Payments Utsav 2023. Digital Payments Utsav is a comprehensive campaign aimed at promoting digital payments across India.

About Digital Payments Utsav 2023

The “Digital Payments Utsav” is an extraordinary campaign that will showcase India’s journey of digital transformation, with a series of events and initiatives to be held from 9th February to 9th October 2023.

  • The focus of the campaign will be on promoting digital payments in the country, especially in the cities of Lucknow, Pune, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, as part of the G20 Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG) event.
  • The launch of the Digital Payments Utsav marks a major milestone in the government’s efforts to promote digital payments and drive digital transformation in India.
  • The comprehensive campaign is expected to bring together various stakeholders, including the government, industry, and citizens, to drive the growth of the digital economy and promote financial inclusion.

Geological Survey of India has for the first time established Lithium inferred resources of 5.9 million tonnes in Salal-Haimana area of Reasi District of Jammu & Kashmir (UT). This report along with 15 other resource bearing geological reports and 35 Geological memorandums were handed over to respective state governments during the 62nd Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) meeting held on 09th February 2023.

Key Findings of GSI

Out of these 51 mineral blocks, 5 blocks pertains to gold and other blocks pertains to commodities like potash, molybdenum, base metals etc.

  • These mineral blocks are spread across 11 states of Jammu & Kashmir (UT), Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
  • The blocks were prepared based on the work carried out by GSI from field seasons 2018-19 to till date.
  • Apart from these, 17 reports of Coal and Lignite with a total resource of 7897 million tonnes were also handed over to Ministry of Coal.
  • Seven Publications on different themes and intervention areas in which GSI operates was also released during the meeting.

The Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) is an important platform of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Ministry of Mines. On the CGPB, the Annual Field Season Program (FSP) of GSI is placed for discussion for synergy and to avoid duplication of work.

  • The members of CGPB and other stakeholders like State Governments, Central/ State Government Mineral Exploration Agencies, PSUs and Private Entrepreneurs place their requests for collaborative work with GSI.
  • Based on the priorities set by the Government of India and the importance and urgency of proposals presented by the members and stakeholders, the Annual Programme of GSI is given a final shape.
