Lachit Barphukan- 400th Birth Anniversary Celebrations

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the closing ceremony of the year long celebrations of 400th Birth Anniversary of Lachit Barphukan on 25th November, 2022 in New Delhi.
  • Lachit Barphukan’s 400th Birth Anniversary Celebrations were inaugurated in February this year by the then Hon’ble President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind in Guwahati.

Who was Lachit Barphukan?

  • Lachit Barphukan was born on 24th November, 1622 and died on 25th April, 1672.
  • Lachit Barphukan was the famous General of the Royal Army of the Ahom Kingdom of Assam who defeated the Mughals and successfully halted the ever expanding ambitions of the Mughals under Aurangzeb.
  • Lachit Barphukan inspired the Assamese soldiers in the Battle of Saraighat fought in 1671, and delivered a crushing and humiliating defeat on the Mughals.
  • The heroic fight of Lachit Barphukan and his army remains one of the most inspiring military feats of resistance in the history of our country.

  • Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare is open to taking pro-farmer changes in Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) in response to the recent climate crisis and rapid technological advances.

 

Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)- Key Changes

  • Several new fundamental features were also added during PMFBY’s revision in 2018 such as-
    • Increasing the crop loss intimation period for farmers from 48 hours to 72 hours,
    • Keeping in mind that damage signatures disappear or are lost in case of localized calamities after 72 hours.
  • Similarly, post its revamp in 2020, the scheme added voluntary enrolment and inclusion of add on cover for wildlife attack, to make the scheme even more farmer friendly.

 

Key Features of PM Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)

  • About: PMFBY is a centrally sponsored scheme to provide insurance coverage and financial support to the farmers in the event of failure of any of the notified crop as a result of natural calamities, pests & diseases.
    • PMFBY was launched in 2016 by replacing two schemes namely, National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS) as well as the Modified NAIS.
  • PMFBY Premium: The scheme has a uniform premium of only 2% to be paid by farmers for all Kharif crops and 5% for all Rabi crops.
    • In case of annual commercial and horticultural crops, the premium to be paid by farmers will be only 5%.
    • The balance premium is equally divided between Centre and the state.
    • There is no upper limit on Government subsidy. Even if balance premium is 90%, it will be borne by the Government.
  • Dispute Resolution: To resolve the technical disputes between insurance companies and other stakeholders including States, following committees have been set-
    • At Centre Level: Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) at Centre level and
    • At State Level: State Technical Advisory Committees (STAC) at State level.

  • The Vice President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar is expected to address the valedictory session of UNESCO India Africa Hackathon as a Chief Guest at Gautam Buddha University, Uttar Pradesh.
  • UNESCO India Africa Hackathon was inaugurated at Gautam Buddha University with a grand opening ceremony on 22nd November, 2022.

What is the UNESCO India Africa Hackathon?

  • About: The UNESCO INDIA – AFRICA Hackathon is an annual 36 hours event that aims to tackle the common challenges faced by their countries and serves as a facilitator for cultural amalgamation.
  • Participation: The Annual UNESCO INDIA – AFRICA Hackathon brings together students, educators, teachers, and the research community of India and its African partners.

Significance of India Africa Hackathon 2022

  • The UNESCO INDIA – AFRICA Hackathon provides a suitable platform allowing young innovators to come together and find solutions for social, environmental and technical problems faced by the collaborating nations.
  • It serves as the foundation for creating potential start-ups with the potential to transform the world.
  • It allows the participating students to unleash their creativity and explore new technologies to solve real-world problems under the guidance of experts – thus, spearheading business innovation in the modern world.
  • The Hackathon also serves as a symbol of the close relations cherished by India and its African counterparts and embodies the spirit of collaboration – bringing them together to solve problems for the betterment of humankind.

 

HADR Exercise ‘Samanvay 2022’

 

Exercise ‘Samanvay 2022’ in News

  • Indian Air Force is conducting the Annual Joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Exercise ‘Samanvay 2022’ from 28 November 2022 to 30 November 2022 at Air Force Station Agra.
  • Hon’ble Raksha Mantri, Shri Rajnath Singh will be Chief Guest for the Capability Demonstration events planned during the exercise on 29 November 2022.

Exercise ‘Samanvay 2022’ 

  • About: HADR Exercise’Samanvay 2022′ aims to assess the efficacy of institutional Disaster Management structures and contingency measures in India.
  • Key Activities: Exercise’Samanvay 2022′ will comprise-
    • A seminar on Disaster Management,
    • A ‘Multi Agency Exercise’ involving static and flying displays of various HADR assets and
    • A ‘Table Top Exercise’.
  • Participation: Along with involvement of various stakeholders from the country, the exercise will see participation by representatives from the ASEAN countries as well.

Exercise ‘Samanvay 2022’ Importance

  • Samanvay 2022 will promote a synergistic approach towards HADR by various national and regional stakeholders involved in Disaster Management including the Civil Administration, the Armed Forces, NDMA, NIDM, NDRF, DRDO, BRO, IMD, NRS and INCOIS.
  • Samanvay 2022 multi-agency engagement is expected to contribute in the evolution of institutional frameworks for effective communication, interoperability, cooperation and their application for successful conduct of HADR.
  • The Samanvay exercise also aims to provide a unique platform for exchange of domain knowledge, experience and best practices with the participating ASEAN member countries.
