Recently, Imphal, India’s 3rd indigenous stealth destroyer under Project 15B class, undertook her maiden sea sortie.

Imphal stealth destroyer Ship is Indian Navy’s third indigenous stealth destroyer of the Project 15B class. Imphal stealth destroyer Ship is planned to be commissioned later this year by Indian Navy.

  • Development and Design: The Imphal vessel has been designed in-house by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and construction by Mazagon Dock Ltd. (MDL).

INS Imphal Features

The INS Imphal comes equipped with advanced technology, including various radar and sonar systems such as the IAI EL/M-2248 MF-STAR S-Band AESA radar, BEL RAWL-02/LW-08 L-Band air-search radar, and Terma/Tata Scanter-6002 X-Band surface-search radar.

  • For sonar systems, the ship features BEL HUMSA-NG active/passive sonar and BEL Nagin active towed-array sonar.
  • Additionally, the INS Imphal is equipped with a DRDO Shakti EW suite that has ESM/ECM capabilities as well as a “Radar Finger Printing System” (RFPS), and a DRDO Nayan COMINT suite for electronic warfare.

INS Imphal Armaments

In terms of armament, the INS Imphal ship has 4 x Kavach decoy launchers, 2 x Maareech torpedo-countermeasure systems, 4 x 8-cell VLS with a total of 32 Barak 8 surface-to-air missiles for anti-air warfare, 2 x 8-cell VLS for 16 BrahMos anti-ship missiles for anti-surface warfare, and 4 x 533 mm (21 in) torpedo tubes and 2 x RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launchers for anti-submarine warfare.

  • The vessel also boasts 1 x OTO Melara 76 mm naval gun, 4 x AK-630M CIWS, and 2 x OFT 12.7 mm M2 Stabilized Remote Controlled Gun for its gun systems.
  • The INS Imphal can accommodate two multi-role helicopters in its enclosed helicopter hangar and flight deck.
