Global DPI Summit 2023 held on sidelines of G20 Digital Economy Working Group

Global DPI Summit: The Global DPI Summit refers to an international event that focuses on discussions and collaborations related to Digital Public Infrastructures (DPIs). It serves as a platform for digital decision-makers from around the world to come together and exchange insights, ideas, and best practices regarding DPIs. The Global DPI Summit is also important for UPSC Prelims Exam and UPSC Mains Exam (GS Paper 2- International Relations; GS Paper 3- Digital Infrastructure).

Global DPI Summit in News

Recently, the Global DPI Summit was held in conjunction with the third meeting of the G20 Digital Economy Working Group. The Global DPI Summit proved to be a resounding success. The esteemed inauguration of the Global DPI Summit was graced by the presence of Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Electronics and IT and MSDE.

Global DPI Summit Details

Global DPI Summit 2023 was attended by 150 foreign delegates from around 50 countries and over 250 delegates in-person and more than 2000 persons attended the summit live.

  • As part of the summit, India entered into Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with four countries: Armenia, Sierra Leone, Suriname, and Antigua and Barbuda.
  • These MoUs entail the sharing of INDIA STACK, which represents a collection of highly effective digital solutions implemented on a large scale to benefit the population.

Global DPI Summit Sessions

The Global DPI Summit 2023 was held under 10 important sessions viz.

  • ‘Overview of Digital Public Infrastructure’,
  • ‘Digital Identities for empowering people’,
  • ‘Digital Payments and Financial Inclusion’,
  • ‘DPI for Judicial Systems and Regulations’,
  • ‘Digital Document Exchange for efficient service delivery’,
  • ‘Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) for DPI’,
  • ‘Digital Education and Skilling’,
  • ‘DPI for Digital Health and Climate Action’,
  • ‘Digital Agriculture Ecosystem’, and
  • ‘Building the Global DPI Ecosystem’.

Global DPI Summit Focus Area

The Global DPI Summit served as a global platform for engaging in discussions about sector-agnostic (foundational) and sectoral Digital Public Infrastructures (DPIs).

  • These discussions involved the participation of 60 global experts and covered a wide range of topics, including leadership, policy, and practitioner insights.
  • The discussions were thought-provoking and aimed at shaping the future of DPIs.

Global DPI Exhibition

The Exhibition featured 14 experience zones that highlighted the successful implementation of various Digital Public Infrastructures (DPIs).

  • These zones showcased DPIs related to-
    • Digital Identity,
    • Fast Payment,
    • DigiLocker,
    • Soil Health Card,
    • E-National Agriculture Market,
    • Unified Mobile App for New-Age Governance,
    • Open Network for Digital Commerce,
    • Seamless travel experience at airports,
    • Language translation,
    • Learning solutions,
    • Tele-medical consultation, and
    • Digital India Journey.
  • The Global DPI exhibition was visited by delegates attending the summit and the G20 DEWG meeting.
  • Additionally, professionals, youth, and senior citizens from Pune also had the opportunity to visit the exhibition.

Global DPI Summit Significance

India assumed a leadership role by hosting the Global DPI Summit, offering a global platform to digital decision-makers from 50 countries and various international organizations. This initiative solidified India’s position as a bridge between the Global North (G20 members) and the Global South (developing and low- and middle-income countries). G20 Digital Economy Working Group

The G20 Digital Economy Working Group is a forum established within the framework of the Group of Twenty (G20) to address various issues and challenges related to the digital economy. The working group consists of representatives from G20 member countries, international organizations, and relevant stakeholders from the public and private sectors.

  • The main objective of the G20 Digital Economy Working Group is to promote cooperation and coordination among G20 members in harnessing the potential of the digital economy for inclusive and sustainable growth.
  • The working group focuses on policy discussions, sharing best practices, and identifying areas of common interest and cooperation in digital economy-related topics.
  • Some key areas of focus for the G20 Digital Economy Working Group include digital infrastructure development, digital connectivity, digital skills and inclusion, digital trade and investment, data governance and privacy, cybersecurity, innovation, and emerging technologies.
