Energy Transitions Working Group G20: It is a grouping that focuses on achieving energy transition in the world. Energy Transitions Working Group 2023 is being held under India’s G20 Presidency. The second meeting of the Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) during India’s G20 Presidency came to a successful conclusion on April 3, 2023 in Gandhinagar.

2nd Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) Meeting 2023

During 2nd ETWG Meet 2023, member countries engaged in constructive discussions and deliberations focusing on key priority areas, outlined under India’s Presidency.

  • Participation: More than 100 representatives from G20 member nations, 10 specially invited countries, and 14 international organizations took part in the two-day 2nd ETWG Meet 2023 event.
  • 2nd ETWG Venue: 2nd G20 Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) 2023 was held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
    • 1st ETWG Meet was held in Bengaluru from Feb. 5-7, 2023.
  • Outcome: The deliberations held during 2nd ETWG Meeting will be carried forward to the upcoming 3rd G20 Energy Transitions Working Group Meeting, which is scheduled to be held in Mumbai from May 15-17, 2023.

2nd ETWG Meeting 2023 Discussions

During the discussions, member countries expressed significant support for the formation of the Global Biofuels Alliance.

  • Another significant point of discussion was related to the provision of low-cost financing for energy transition.
    • In this regard, member countries highlighted the critical role of the international financial structure, including the need to raise the ambitions of multilateral financial institutions.
  • The importance of coordinated actions with the Sustainable Finance Working Group, launched under India’s G20 Presidency, was also emphasized.
  • In addition to the Meeting, three side events were held on the sidelines, namely
    • ‘Green Hydrogen – Advancing Net Zero Pathways,’
    • ‘Diversified Renewable Energy Supply Chains for Advancing Energy Transitions,’ and
    • ‘Accelerating Cooling as a key enabler towards energy transition’.
  • Furthermore, the event showcased an exhibition, which included the display of India’s first H2 Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) truck.

Energy Transitions Working Group Meeting

The First G20 Energy Transitions Working Group Meeting was held in Bengaluru on February 5-7, 2023.

  • On the side-lines, a high-level international seminar on ‘Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS)’ had been organized at the 1st ETWG.
  • On the side-lines, a high-level international seminar on ‘Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS)’ was also organized at the 1st ETWG.
  • The seminar focused on highlighting the importance of carbon capture, utilization, and storage, considered vital for achieving net-zero targets.

G20 Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) Meet

G20 ETWG will conduct four (4) working group meetings to set the agenda and identify action areas for the planned G20 Energy Transition Ministerial Meeting (ETMM).

  • Schedule: The schedule of meetings will take place as follows:
    • 1st ETWG Meet – Bengaluru, February 5-7, 2023
    • 2nd ETWG Meet – Gandhinagar, April 2-4, 2023
    • 3rd ETWG Meet – Mumbai, May 15-17, 2023
    • 4th ETWG Meet – Goa, July 19-20, 2023
    • Energy Transition Ministerial Meeting (ETMM)– Goa, July 22, 2023
  • Participation: India is hosting 150+ delegates from 19 countries, European Union and 9 guest countries.
    • In addition, leading International Organisations and Regional Organisations and knowledge partners will be part of the meeting.

Energy Transitions Working Group Priority Areas

Energy Transitions Working Group while retaining focus on achieving energy transition, will emphasize on addressing technology gaps and financing to ensure that it is delivered across countries in a time-bound and affordable manner without compromising the energy needs of the communities.

The priority areas for the Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) include the following:

  • Energy Transition through Addressing Technology Gaps
  • Low-cost Financing for Energy Transition
  • Energy Security and Diversified Supply Chains
  • Energy Efficiency, Industrial Low Carbon Transitions and Responsible Consumption,
  • Fuels for Future (3F) and
  • Universal Access to Clean Energy and Just, Affordable, and Inclusive Energy Transition Pathways
