National Teacher’s Day in India is observed on 5th September every year. It is a very important and special day in the lives of Teachers and Students. Teachers Day History

Teacher’s Day in India is celebrated on the 5th of September since 1962 when Dr. Sarvappali Radhakrishnan was approached by some students to seek permission to celebrate his birthday. In return, he asked it to be called and celebrated as Teacher’s Day. “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers’ Day,” Dr Radhakrishnan said in 1962. Thus, every year Teacher’s Day in India is celebrated on the 5th of September with warmth and excitement.

Who was Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan?

Dr Sarvapplai Radhakrishnan was always admired and respected by his students at Presidency College, Chennai and the University of Calcutta where he taught Philosophy. He believed that true teachers help students to think rationally and independently. Dr Sarvapalli once said, “The end-product of education should be a free creative man, who can battle against historical circumstances and adversities of nature,” and he believed that teachers play a vital role in shaping the minds of the younger generation.

Teachers Day in Korea

National Teachers Day in Korea is celebrated in the mid of May. It all started when a group of Red Cross youth visited their ill teacher in hospital in 1963. Later in 1965, the holiday was moved to mid-May (as it is presently) to coincide with the birth anniversary of King Sejong the Great (1397-1450).

The first Sunday of June is celebrated as National Teachers Day in Hungary. In 1951, the Council of Ministers released a regulation declaring the first Sunday of June as National Teachers Day in Hungary.

Malaysia celebrated Teachers Day on 16th May which is also called Hari Guru in the Malay language. There is no holiday on the day, however, Teachers Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm.
