Exams Conducted by UPSC

1. UPSC CSE: Civil Services Examination

  • The Union Public Service Commission holds the Civil Services Examination (CSE), a national competitive exam, in India for the recruitment of higher civil services, such as the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, and Indian Police Service.
  • It is known as the UPSC examination and is divided into three phases: a preliminary examination with two objective-type papers (Civil Service Aptitude Test, or CSAT), a main examination with nine conventional-type papers, two of which are qualifying and only seven out of a possible nine points are taken into account and a personality test.
  • A successful applicant must endure 32 hours of testing over the course of the entire procedure, which takes around a year.

2. UPSC IFS: Indian Forest Service examination

  • One of the three All-India Services of the Indian Government is the Indian Forest Service (IFS).
  • The Indian Administrative Service and the Indian Police Service are the other two All India Services.
  • The All India Services Act, of 1951, which it was established under, was passed by the Indian government in 1966.
  • The service puts the National Forest Policy into practice in order to safeguard the nation’s ecological stability through the preservation and inclusive sustainable management of natural resources.
  • The service’s employees are also in charge of overseeing the nation’s National Parks, Tiger Reserves, Wildlife Sanctuaries, and other Protected Areas.
  • A Forest Service officer has complete autonomy from the district administration and has exclusive access to all administrative, judicial, and financial functions.
  • Indian Forest Service officers occasionally hold positions in state forest departments, including District/Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Conservator of Forests, Chief Conservator of Forests, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, etc.

3. UPSC CDS: Combined Defence Services Examination

  • The Union Public Service Commission administers the Combined Defence Services Examination, also known as the CDS Exam, to select Commissioned Officers for the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training School, Indian Navy Academy, and Indian Air Force Academy.
  • The exam notification is typically published in December and May, while the exam itself takes place in April and September, accordingly.
  • Only graduates who are single are permitted to take the exam. A twice-yearly examination is done.
  • Following an interview with the Services Selection Board, successful candidates are admitted into the different Academies (SSB).

4. UPSC IES: Engineering Services Examination

  • The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) holds the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) to select candidates for the services that support the technical needs of the Government of India. It is a three-part competitive test that includes personality, subjective, and objective components.
  • Five All India Services—the Indian Engineering Service, Indian Medical Service, Indian Forest Service, Indian Administrative Service, and the Indian Police Service—are to be established, according to the All India Services Act of 1951.
  • Officers hired through ESE are required to direct and coordinate various technical operations.
  • Across a wide range of economic sectors and infrastructure, such as railways, roads, defense, manufacturing, inspection, supply, construction, public works, power, and telecommunications, government spending accounts for more than 15% of India’s gross domestic product.
  • The President of India appoints people to these positions.

5. UPSC NDA: National Defence Academy Examination

  • The Services Selection Board conducts in-depth interviews with applicants to the NDA after the UPSC administers an annual written exam.
  • These interviews involve general aptitude, psychological testing, teamwork, leadership abilities, physical and social skills, as well as medical exams.
  • Two times a year, for the semesters beginning in July and January, new classes are admitted. Every year, 40,000 applicants take each written exam.
  • Normally, 6,300 of these receive interview invitations, and 300–350 are chosen to enroll in the course.
  • The recommended minimum and maximum ages are 16 and a half and 19 and a half years, respectively.
  • 572 students were accepted into the National Defence Academy’s Joint Services Wing during the academic year 1953–1954. 6,061 applications in all were submitted to UPSC.

6. UPSC NA: Naval Academy Examination

  • Through the UPSC’s NDA and NA exams, prospective applicants to the Indian Navy’s undergraduate officer-training program submit their applications.
  • The Indian Naval Academy Course (INAC), the INA’s flagship program, requires cadets to complete four years of in-academy training.
  • Moreover, NDA students who choose the Navy complete three years of combined training at NDA, Khadakwasla, together with those who choose the Army and Air Force.
  • For the following year, they switch to INA.
  • Applicants for Navy Tech Entrance through 10+2 have the choice of majoring in Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Naval Architecture, and upon graduation receive a Bachelor of Technology degree.
  • Cadets are appointed as sub-lieutenants in the Navy after graduation. After graduation, cadets with a major in naval architecture must complete an additional six months of instruction at the Navy Shipyard in Visakhapatnam.
  • At the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, they might also choose to enroll for extra post-graduate specialization in the area.

7. UPSC CMS: Combined Medical Services Examination

  • The Combined Medical Services Examination, also known as the CMS Examination, is administered by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the purpose of hiring medical officers for a variety of government-affiliated organizations, including the Indian Ordnance Factories, Indian Railways, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and New Delhi Municipal Council.

8. UPSC SCRA: Special Class Railway Apprentice

  • The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India’s Special Class Railway Apprentice (SCRA) program recruited individuals to train in the mechanical engineering undergraduate program at the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Jamalpur.
  • One of the oldest programs in India, it began in 1927.
  • Since UPSC expressed its disinclination to continue holding the exam, Railways made the decision to discontinue it in 2015.
  • However, the Ministry of Finance has suggested beginning to administer the exam again in 2021 in its report on the rationalization of Indian Railways, asserting that Indian Railways requires specialized training and abilities beyond what is part of a conventional graduate program.

9. UPSC ISS: Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service Examination

  • The Indian Statistical Service is a civil service in the executive branch of the Indian Government that falls under Group A of the Central Civil Services.
  • A highly skilled civil service in statistical methodology and applications is the ISS.
  • The majority of the probationary training program is to be devoted to acquiring technical knowledge in the fields of official statistics, economics, financial statistics, survey methodology, etc., with the main mandate of producing quality official statistics with better methods and techniques, providing solutions to the data and information needs, and interpretation and analysis of statistics.

10. UPSC CGSE: Combined Geoscientist and Geologist Examination

  • For the purpose of hiring and selecting candidates for the positions of Junior Hydro-geologist (Scientist ‘B’), Group ‘A’ for Central Ground Water Board, and Geologist, Geophysicist, and Chemist, Group ‘A’ in GSI, Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts a Combined Geo-Scientist Examination (CGSE).
  • To select the candidates for the positions, the Commission publishes the announcement for the Joint Geoscientist Examination in September of each year.
