Recently, Indian Naval Ship (INS) Mormugao (Pennant 67), a P15B stealth-guided missile destroyer was commissioned into the Indian Navy. This was the second ship to be inducted as a part of the four ‘Visakhapatnam’ class destroyers. Amid the rising tension between India and China, INS Mormugao will boost India’s Strategic Position in the Indian Ocean Region. Why INS Mormugao is in News?

 

  • Stealth guided missile destroyer INS Mormugao, the second of the four ‘Visakhapatnam’ class destroyers, has recently been commissioned into the Indian Navy.
  • The ship was named after a key port in the Indian state of Goa, it was inducted on the eve of Goa Liberation Day.

Background of INS Mormugao?

 

  • INS Mormugao ship was first launched in September 2016 and began sea trials last year on December 19 which coincided with the day that Goa was liberated from Portuguese rule six decades earlier with December 18 marking the launch of Operation Vijay by the Indian Armed Forces in 1961.
  • In 2016 it was launched by former defence minister, the late Manohar Parrikar.

The ship measures 163 metres by 17 metres and has the ability to fight in nuclear, biological, as well as chemical (NBC) warfare due to its total atmospheric control system (TACS).

Key Points to know about INS Mormugao

 

  • The INS Mormugao warship is packed with a plethora of sophisticated sensors, modern radar and weapons systems such as surface-to-surface missiles and surface-to-air missiles.
  • It has weapons like the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, whose range is being extended from 290-km to 450-km.
  • The ship has 70-km MRSAM (medium-range surface-to-air missile) system, torpedo and rocket launchers, and different gun systems as well as a wide array of radars and sensors.
  • The ship measuring 163 metres in length and 17 metres in breadth with a displacement of 7,400 tonnes can be regarded as one of the most potent warships to have been constructed in India.
  • Named after the historic Goan port city Mormugao, the ship undertook her first sea sortie on December 19 last year when Goa celebrated 60 years of liberation from Portuguese rule.
  • INS Mormugao is the second of the four ‘Visakhapatnam’ class destroyers, indigenously designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau.
  • It is constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd under Project-15B at an overall cost of Rs 35,800 crore.
    The ship is propelled by four powerful gas turbines and it is capable of achieving speeds in excess of 30 knots.
  • It is equipped to fight under nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) warfare conditions and that it is fitted with a modern surveillance radar which provides target data to the gunnery weapon systems.
  • The ship’s anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities are provided by the indigenously developed rocket launchers, torpedo launchers and ASW helicopters.

How INS Mormugao is an Indigenous Stealth Guided Missile Destroyer(ISGMD)?

 

  • Over 75 per cent of the ship’s content was manufactured and developed in India, either directly or designed and developed by Indian Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) or through strategic tie-ups and transfer of technology with reputed OEMs in other countries.
  • It is indigenously designed by the Navy’s in-house organisation Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in the country’s financial capital Mumbai.

What is project PB15?

 

  • P15B destroyers is a class of four ships built by the country’s MDSL with INS Visakhapatnam (Pennant D66), commissioned last year in November.
  • These ships are set to be more advanced than the Kolkata class under the project named 15A which comprised INS Kolkata, INS Kochi, and INS Chennai.
  • The contract for the ships was signed back in 2011 and under Project 15B they were to be named after four major Indian cities like Visakhapatnam, Mormugao, Imphal, and Surat.
  • A group of ships with similar tonnage, usage, capabilities, and weaponry are referred to as a ship’s ‘class’. P15B destroyers incorporate new design concepts for improved survivability, seakeeping and manoeuvrability.
  • The warships’ enhanced stealth capabilities also make them difficult to detect.
