The selection process for Indian Engineering Services (IES) which also known as the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The selection process is a three-stage to assess the technical knowledge of candidates for engineering roles in various government sectors. The process is divided into three stages:
- Preliminary Examination
- Main Examination
- Interview
- Preliminary Examination is a two-hour exam with 100 multiple-choice questions. The questions are based on general knowledge, aptitude, and quantitative aptitude. The qualifying mark for the Preliminary Examination is 70% for general category candidates and 60% for reserved category candidates. - After selection, they start as Assistant Executive Engineers or Assistant Directors.
