International Yoga Day (IDY) 2022 in News

  • The countdown to 8th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2022 was started with the inauguration of Yoga Mahotsav 2022 by Ayush Ministry.
  • The International Day of Yoga 2022 campaign is focusing on the theme of 100 days, 100 cities and 100 organizations till June 21 across the globe.

Key Events under International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2022

  • For the first time to celebrate Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav, it will demonstrate Yoga at 75 Heritage Heritage/Iconic cultural sites on June 21, International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2022.
  • Yoga Day 2022 will be celebrated on 21 June 2022 across the world with great enthusiasm and energy.
  • Yoga is helping people to stay energetic and have a strong immune system during a difficult time like COVID-19 Pandemic.
  • Ministry of Ayush is organizing a grand program for demonstration of Common Yoga Protocol in the backdrop of 15th August Park, Lal Quila, (Red Fort) which is the World Health Day, and the 75th day of the countdown to International Day of Yoga (IDY).
  • Yoga T-shirts, Yoga Mats, and Yoga Booklets are also distributed to the organization/people participating in the Yoga Day event to spread awareness about Yoga Day.

International Yoga Day (IDY) 2022 Theme

  • IDY 2022 Theme: International Yoga Day 2022 theme may focus on the benefits of yoga during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Yoga Day 2022 theme focuses on-
    • How yoga helps to cure Covid-19 and
    • How it will help the achieving holistic health of every individual.
  • However, the official IDY 2022 theme and events are yet to be decided by the United Nations.

International Day of Yoga (IDY)

  • Background: The draft resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga was proposed by India and endorsed by a record 175 member states.
    • The proposal was first introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly.
  • About: the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga by UN resolution 69/131 in 2014.
  • Aim: The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.


What is Yoga?

  • Yoga is a 5,000-year-old tradition from India that combines physical, mental and spiritual pursuits to achieve harmony of the body and mind.
  • The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.
  • In contemporary times, it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.


International Day of Yoga (IDY)- Previous IDYs and IDY Theme

International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2015

  • In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first International Day of Yoga on June 21, 2015.
  • The event was recognized and celebrated across 170 countries including the USA, China and Canada.


International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2016

  • IDY 2016 Theme: The second International Day of Yoga was held around the theme, ‘Connect with Youth’ to engage and seek participation from the younger audience.
  • The Prime Minister led a mass yoga demonstration held at Chandigarh, where more than 30,000 people participated.
  • The performance of yoga by 150 Divyang Jan along with the Prime Minister was one of the highlights.
  • Around the world, 192 United Nations Member States observed IDY- 2016.


International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2017

  • Ministry of Ayush in association with leading Yoga Institutions, Centre and State Governments, organized the third International Day of Yoga on the ‘Yoga for Wellness’ theme.
  • Later in the year, the third International Conference on Yoga was held at Pravasi Bhartiya Kendra, New Delhi from 10-11 October 2017, in an effort to convert IDY into a calendar of yoga activities spread over the entire year.
  • The Conference registered more than 500 eminent participants including experts of Yoga and 80 foreign delegates.


International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2018

  • The main event of 4th International Day of Yoga was held at the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun (Uttarakhand).
  • IDY 2018 Theme: The theme for 4th International Day of Yoga-2018 was ‘Yoga for Peace’.
  • Over 100,000 people gathered at a Yoga session in Kota (Rajasthan) and performed Yoga together, earning the city a Guinness World Record.


International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2019

  • IDY 2019 Theme: The theme of the 5th International Day of Yoga was ‘Yoga for Heart’.
  • The main event was held in Ranchi (Jharkhand). Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi led a crowd of over 40,000 people, who attended this event there.


International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2020

  • IDY 2020 Theme: The theme of this year’s International Day of Yoga is ‘Ghar Ghar me Yog’ which signifies the importance of staying at home and practice Yoga with family while observing social distancing.
  • Staying at home would keep you away from the contagious Coronavirus and Yoga would help keep you and your family in good health.

  • IDY 2021 Theme: The theme of the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2021 is “Yoga at home and Yoga with Family”.
  • The International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2021 was marked at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic continued to upend the lives and livelihoods of people globally.
