13th April- Jallianwala Bagh Massacre Day

Every year 13th of April is observed as the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre Day. On 13th April 1919, a peaceful crowd gathered at the Jallianbagh in Amritsar on the day of Punjabi Festivity to protest against the Rawlatt Act and the arrest of various pro-Independence activists. The British Colonial Troops under direct order from General Dyer fired indiscriminately at the peaceful crowd without any provocation. Hundreds of people include men, women, and children. Indians across the world remember this mournfully.

14th April- Baisakhi

Baisakhi is the Harvest Festival of Punjab. It is one of the most important festivals for Sikhs as Guru Govind Singh chose Baisakhi to establish the Khalsa. Baisakhi is celebrated all over India and it is known by various names. Baisakhi or harvest festival is known as Poila Boishakh in West Bengal, Bihu in Assam, Puthandu in Tamilnadu, Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh, Pooram Vishnu in Kerala and so on. It is also celebrated as the first of the year based on the Hindu Calender.

14th April- B.R. Ambedkar Remembrance Day

On 14th April, Ambedkar Jayanti or Bhim Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the memory and contribution of Bhim Rao Ambedkar. He was an Indian Politician and social reformer and he is also known as the Father of the Indian Constitution. He was the Chairman of the drafting committee and under his leadership, the committee submitted the final draft of the Indian Constitution on 25th November 1949. He was born on 14th April 1891.

21st April- National Civil Service Day

Civil Service Day is observed annually on the 21st of April to reaffirm the commitment of civil servants towards the welfare of the people. The day brings together civil servants from different parts of the country, allowing them to share their experiences and learn from each other’s experiences of working in the public sector. The significance of this date lies in the fact that on 21st April 1947, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel delivered a remarkable speech at the Metcalf House, addressing the first batch of civil servants in Independent India. In his speech, he referred to civil servants as the ‘steel frame of India’, inspiring them to serve the nation.

22nd April- World Earth Day

World Earth Day, observed annually on 22nd April, aims to promote the message of preserving the environment and raising awareness about the need to conserve natural resources for future generations. Earth is the only planet in the universe that supports life, making it vital to protect it. Gaylord Nelson, with the help of Denis Hayes, organized the first Earth Day in 1970 to unite the environmental movement and educate participants on the importance of environmental conservation. The day continues to be celebrated worldwide to spread awareness about the significance of the planet and the need for its preservation.

25th April- World Malaria Day

Every year on April 25th, the world observes World Malaria Day, aimed at creating awareness about the global campaign to control and eventually eradicate malaria. The event originated from Africa Malaria Day, which African governments had been observing since 2001. The first World Malaria Day took place in 2008, and since then, the day has been celebrated annually to highlight the efforts towards malaria control. The theme for World Malaria Day 2023 is “A plan to reduce mortality rates by 90% over the next decade.”

28th April- World Day for Safety and Health at Work
