CSIR NET Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who want to apply for CSIR Exam 2023, he/she must follow the eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), and for Lectureship (LS) which has been mentioned below. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) National Eligibility Test (NET) is a national-level test to determine eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Lectureship (LS) positions in Indian universities and research institutions. The eligibility criteria for CSIR NET are as follows:

CSIR NET Eligibility Essential Educational Qualifications

Candidates may check the essential qualification as per their respective course from the given below article. The NTA has set a minimum educational qualification for candidates interested in the CSIR NET exam.

  • Candidates must hold an M.Sc.(Master in Science) or an equivalent degree, a B.E, an Integrated BS-MS, a BS 4-year degree, a B.Pharma, a B.Tech, or an MBBS with at least 55% of the required marks to be eligible to apply online for the CSIR NET exam 2023.
  • Candidates who are appearing for M.Sc. or having completed 10+2+3 years of the above qualifying examination as on the closing date of online submission of Application Form, are also eligible to apply in the above subject under the Result Awaited (RA) category.
  • Candidate having B.Sc. (Hons.) or equivalent degree or enrolled in Integrated MS-PhD program with at least 55% marks are also eligible.
  • B.E./ B.S./ B.Tech./ B.Pharma/ MBBS final year/result awaited candidates are eligible to apply for fellowship only not for Lectureship/Assistant professor.
  • B.Sc. (Hons.) final year/Result awaited candidates are not eligible to apply

CSIR NET Eligibility Criteria Age Limit & Nationality

Candidates must need to follow all the CSIR NET Eligibility 2023 requirements to appear in the upcoming CSIR NET exam. Candidates need to follow the prescribed Age Limit set by NTA.  The detailed CSIR NET Age Limit Criteria for the JRF & Lectureship have been mentioned below for different positions.

CSIR NET Eligibility Criteria Age Limit For JRF

  • Maximum age limit  for JRF Post is 28 years as on 01-07-2023.
  • Candidates from the reserved categories such as  (SC/ST/Persons with Disability/ Third Gender and female applicants) may be relaxable up to 5 years and OBC – Non-creamy layer candidates) may have the upper age limit relaxed by up to 3 years, respectively.

CSIR NET Eligibility Criteria 2023 -Age Limit For Lectureship

  • There is no stipulated upper age limit for the Lectureship position.

CSIR NET Subject-Wise Qualification 2023

Here we are discussing the Subject-Wise Qualification 2023 for CSIR NET Exam 2023.  Candidates need to score either of the below-mentioned qualifications with at least 55 % marks (for General and OBC Category) or 50% marks (SC/ST/Persons with Disability (PwD) candidates).


Educational Qualification

Life Science

Academic Qualification in Life Science only

Chemical Science

Candidate must hold a degree in M.Sc./BS/B-Tech or any other equivalent qualification in Chemistry.

Earth Science

Candidate must have completed their M.Sc./BS-MS/BS-4 Years/B-Pharma or any other equivalent degree in Earth Science


Candidate must hold M.Sc./BS-MS/BS/B-Tech degree or any other equivalent qualification in Mathematics

Physical Science

Candidate must have completed M.Sc. Physics or BS-MS in Physics or any other equivalent qualification.

CSIR NET Reservation Criteria 2023

NTA has also shared the CSIR NET Reservation criteria for the reserved category only. CSIR has mentioned the stipulated norms regarding the marks relaxation for different categories. In the table below, there is a relaxation of marks for qualifying applicants from the reserved categories as per CSIR NET guidelines

What is the maximum age limit for CSIR NET exam?

Candidates should be maximum of 28 years as of the last application date, to be eligible to apply for CSIR NET JRF. However, there is no upper age limit for those applying for a Lectureship.

No, there are no limits on the number of attempts. Candidates can write the exam as many times as they want only if they are in the eligible age group.
