Eligibility Criteria for Governor of States in India

As per the Constitution of India, a person must meet the following eligibility criteria to become a Governor of a state in India:

  • The person must be a citizen of India.
  • The person must be at least 35 years old.
  • There are no specific educational qualifications required to become a Governor of a state.
  • The person cannot hold any office of profit under the central or state government or any local authority.
  • The person cannot be a Member of Parliament (MP) or a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of any state or union territory.
  • The person must not be an active member of any political party or participate in any political activity.
  • Once appointed as the Governor, the person must not take part in any political activity and should maintain a neutral stance while performing their duties.
  • The person cannot be an employee of the Central or State Government or any Public Sector Undertaking.
  • The person must be of sound mind and not have been convicted of any criminal offence.
  • The person cannot be a Governor of more than one state.
