National Education Policy 2020: HRD Ministry renamed as Ministry of Education

National Education Policy 2020: In a press conference which was held on 29th July discussing the New Education Policy 2020, Union Minister Prakash Javedkar and Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank announce that the HRD Ministry will be renamed to “Ministry of Education” after the approval by Union Cabinet. The HRD Ministry comes under and observed by the head Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. Ramesh Pokhriyal, The Union HRD Minister and Prakash Javadekar, Broadcasting Minister addressed the Cabinet together briefs the New Education Policy.

In the new draft for NEP 2020, the changing of the name from MHRD to Ministry of Education was the key recommendation in order to focus and motive education & learning. According to the sources, the idea of changing the name of the Ministry was advised by a team of experts forming the New Education Policy, which was led by former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan. Furthermore, previously many RSS affiliates also demanded the change of the name stating that former PM Rajiv Gandhi in September 1985 had changed the name of the education ministry to HRD ministry after misleading by some people close to him. After keeping every aspect together, the Union Cabinet approved the draft of the name change from Ministry of Human Resource Development to the Ministry of Education and was announced with the New Education Policy on Wednesday.    

New National Education Policy 2020: Complete Details

In 1986, the first National Education Policy was formed in India. During the Rajiv Gandhi Cabinet, in 1985, when PV Narshimha Rao was the first Education Minister, the Ministry of Human Resource Development was called with the name of Education Ministry which was subsequently changed next year in 1986 while the first National Education Policy was formed.  

Earlier the Education Policy was modified in 1992, which after around 3 decades will be now replaced in 2020 with various new amendments regarding the growth of Education System in India. The Union Cabinet has approved the New Education Policy in the press conference on 29th July 2020 and announces that the academic session will begin in September-October in the lieu of COVID-19 spread across the country. The draft for same was reviewed by The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1st May which was prepared under the expertise of former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan who implied all the changes in the previous Education Policy.

While the NEP was formed with the perspective of restructuring the Indian education system, one of its major decisions under NEP is to rename HRD ministry as the Ministry of Education to step back to focus on education and learning.

The NEP 2020 extends the Right to Education to the students under the age group of 3 years to 18 years and load will be reduced in school education with the motive to focus more on Extra Curriculum activities.
