DU Ph.D. Selection Process
Selection is done in two stages: the national level test (NET/JRF or similar) and an interview. The merit list gives 70% weightage to the NET score and 30% to the interview. In each phase, seats are first filled from candidates in Block A (NET with JRF and assistant professor eligibility). Block B candidates are considered if seats remain. The interview is compulsory for everyone and is held only in physical mode.
- Candidates present their research interest through a presentation before the committee.
- The committee checks whether the candidate can do the proposed research, whether it can be done at DU, and whether it adds to existing knowledge.
- Some departments, like Sociology, ask for a research proposal before the interview. Proposals found plagiarised or heavily AI-written can lead to disqualification.
- The merit list is shown on the website after DRC approval, and a waiting list is also made.
- Selected candidates must go to the department for document verification and then pay the admission fee.
- DU will not give TA/DA or accommodation for the interview.
University of Delhi Ph.D. Stipend
The bulletin does not mention a fixed stipend amount. It explains who gets financial help and from where. Candidates with JRF or an equivalent fellowship get money from the agency that gave them the fellowship. Others may get a Non-NET UGC fellowship, depending on the grant available. Check the exact amount from the funding agency or your department.
- JRF or equivalent holders get assistance from the concerned funding agency.
- JRF/SRF scholars working in projects get assistance from those projects.
- Scholars without any financial help may get a Non-NET UGC fellowship. DU decides the number of such fellowships each year.
- Scholars on paid study leave do not get financial assistance.
- Foreign scholars must show proof of their own financial support for the full Ph.D.
Documents Required for DU Ph.D. Admission
Document checking happens in person at the department after selection. Keep original certificates ready, as fake or wrong documents can lead to cancellation of admission. The name of the candidate and the parents’ names must match in all documents. Certificates not in English or Hindi need a translation certified by the last institute attended. The list below covers the documents mentioned in the bulletin.
- Master’s/M.Phil. mark sheets and degree certificates
- NET/JRF scorecard or other national test result
- Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwBD) in the candidate’s name
- OBC-NCL and EWS certificates with the income certificate issued after 31 March 2026
- Research proposal, if the department asks for it
