Ports in India: Classification of Important ports

The Indian government is federal, and maritime transportation is overseen by both the central and state governments, according to the constitution. While the national government’s shipping ministry is in charge of the main ports, the nine coastal states of Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal are in charge of the smaller and intermediate ports. Several of the 187 small and intermediate ports have been identified by the respective governments as needing to be developed in stages, with a large number of them involving public-private partnerships.

Some years back, major ports handled almost 74% of all freight traffic. Except for Kamarajar Port Limited, all are run by the government, however, private sector participation at ports has grown. There are additionally 7 shipyards under the control of the Indian government, 2 shipyards under the control of state governments, and 19 shipyards that are privately owned.

In the year 2000, India had 102 shipping firms, five of which were privately owned and based in India, and one of which was held by the Shipping Corporation of India. There were 639 ships owned by the government, with 91 oil tankers, 79 dry cargo bulk carriers, and 10 cellular container vessels among them.
