RBI Assistant Selection Process 2026
- Preliminary Examination: Qualifying in nature; marks are not counted in the final merit.
- Main Examination: Merit-based; marks from this stage are used for final selection.
- Language Proficiency Test (LPT): Candidates must demonstrate working knowledge of the local language of the state they applied for.
What Is the RBI Assistant Language Proficiency Test?
It is a mandatory test for candidates who have qualified the Main examination. It is conducted to assess a candidate’s ability to write, speak, and understand the official language of the state they have applied to. It is qualifying in nature and does not hold any marks.
What Candidates Should Prepare For LPT?
Candidates should focus on practical language skills including:
- Reading comprehension: Practise reading short passages, notices, and everyday written material in the relevant regional language.
- Writing ability: Practise writing simple sentences and short paragraphs with correct spelling and grammar.
- Speaking and understanding: Practise everyday conversations and listening comprehension in the applicable language.

What Happens After the RBI Assistant LPT?
The Language Proficiency Test is the final stage of the selection process. It is a mandatory assessment but it does not carry any marks. The final appointment is done on the basis of the marks scored in the main examination, provided that the candidate has qualified the LPT as well as Document Verification.
RBI Assistant Prelims Exam Pattern 2026
The Preliminary Examination consists of 100 questions for 100 marks with a total duration of 60 minutes. The section-wise breakup is as follows:

Is there a Negative Marking in the RBI Assistant Exam?
Negative marking is applicable in both the Preliminary and Main examinations. For each wrong answer, 0.25 marks (one-fourth of the assigned marks) will be deducted from the candidate’s total score.
