Following the Bhopal disaster in December 1984, the city drew international attention. The Union Carbide pesticide facility in Bhopal released 32 tonnes of hazardous chemicals, including methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas, resulting in the world’s worst industrial disaster. Toxic wastes damaged the land and groundwater surrounding the industrial site, and the cleanup of environmental contamination and rehabilitation of individuals affected remains a concern for the people of Bhopal. Initially, the official death toll was estimated to be around 4,000. According to an official assessment from Madhya Pradesh, 3,787 people died in the tragedy, while other estimates suggest the number of people killed was much greater. Furthermore, the accident’s medical problems in the weeks and years that followed. In terms of psychological and neurological problems, blindness, skin, vision, breathing, and birth abnormalities, the disaster’s effects can still be felt today.
