UGC NET is the national-level exam conducted in India to determine eligibility for teaching in Indian colleges and universities. This exam is conducted in 83 subjects. UGC NET Commerce Eligibility Criteria

Candidates aspiring to give UGC NET exam has to fulfil certain educational criteria to become eligible to apply for the exam. the detailed eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • The minimum eligibility criteria for applying stipulated by UGC is a Master’s Degree or equivalent examination with at least 55% from any University/ Institution recognized by UGC.
  • Relaxation of  5% marks is provided to candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBC) of Non-Creamy Layer, Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Person with Disability (PwD), Third Gender Category and to the PhD degree holders whose Master’s level of examination have completed by September 19th 1999.
  • Candidates who are pursuing their Master’s degree or equivalent course like CA/ CS/ ICWA are also eligible for applying the exam.
  • There is no restriction imposed by UGC on the number of attempting this exam for ‘Assistant Professor’. However, there is an upper age limit of 30 years for applying for a Junior Research Fellowship’. 
  • Age relaxation of 5 years is provided to candidates belonging to OBC-NCL/ST/SC/PwD/Third gender categories and to women applicants.

UGC NET Exam Pattern 

The UGC NET exam will be conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT). Objective-type multiple-choice questions are asked in this exam. following are the highlights of the exam pattern:

  • The medium of question Papers is in English and Hindi languages only.
  • The UGC NET Exam comprises two papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2- held simultaneously without any break. A total time of 3 hours is given to a candidate to complete both papers. They are free to devote any amount of time to any paper. A total of 150 questions are given to the candidates combining paper 1 and paper 2. All questions are compulsory.
  • Paper 1 is a general paper compulsory for all applicants. This paper is designed to assess the teaching and research aptitude and to test their reasoning ability, divergent thinking, reading comprehension and general awareness of the candidates. It consists of 50 questions of 2 marks each. 
  • Paper 2 is a subject-specific paper. It is based on the subject selected by the candidate from the list of 83 subjects provided by UGC. This Paper is designed to assess the candidate’s knowledge in the domain selected by him/her. It consists of 100 questions of 2 marks each.
  • The foremost positive point to consider here is that the UGC NET exam does not have a negative marking scheme. Correct answers are awarded marks but no mark deductions are made for incorrect answers.

What are the minimum qualifying marks in UGC NET Commerce exam?

Minimum qualifying marks are the minimum marks required to be attained by the candidate in Paper I and Paper II to qualify for the UGC NET exam. These cannot replace the cutoff criterion. These minimum qualifying marks are required by a candidate in addition to the cutoff marks. Example: If the candidate has got marks more than the cutoff. It is also required that he or she must have the minimum marks fixed on each paper by the authorities

The candidates who have applied for commerce subject in the UGC NET exam need to have minimum qualifying marks in both Paper I and Paper II. These are as follows:

UGC NET Commerce Cut Off Marks

The candidate having minimum qualifying marks does not mean that the candidate qualifies UGC NET exam. For the qualifying exam and to be eligible for being an assistant professor candidate needs to clear minimum qualifying marks and cut-off marks. Out of the qualified Candidates, only the top 6% of candidates are selected for ‘Assistant Professor’ and the top 0.5% are selected for the award of ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor’.
