UGC NET Exam Pattern

The UGC NET (National Eligibility Test) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to determine the eligibility of candidates for Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges.   • Mode of Examination: The UGC NET is a computer-based test (CBT), which means that candidates will take the exam on a computer at a designated test center.
  • Number of Papers: UGC NET is divided into two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both papers are conducted on the same day in two separate sessions.
  • Paper 1: General Paper on Teaching and Research Aptitude:
  1. Duration: 3 hours (180 minutes)
  2. Number of Questions: 50
  3. Total Marks: 100
  4. Type of Questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
  5. Syllabus: This paper assesses the candidates’ teaching and research aptitude, reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness. It includes topics like teaching methods, communication, reasoning, data interpretation, etc.
  • Paper 2: Subject-Specific Paper:
  1. Duration: 3 hours (180 minutes)
  2. Number of Questions: 100
  3. Total Marks: 200
  4. Type of Questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
  5. Syllabus: This paper is based on the subject chosen by the candidate. The questions are designed to test the candidate’s in-depth knowledge of the subject. The syllabus for Paper 2 is based on the subject you choose during the application process.
  • Marking Scheme: Each question in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 carries 2 marks. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
  • Language: The UGC NET question paper is available in both English and Hindi. Candidates can choose their preferred language.
  • Cut-off Criteria: To qualify for Assistant Professor, candidates need to secure the minimum cut-off marks in each paper. For the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and eligibility for Assistant Professor, candidates need to clear both papers and also achieve the required cut-off marks.
  • Validity of UGC NET Certificate: The validity of the UGC NET certificate for Assistant Professor is for a lifetime. However, the validity for JRF is three years, during which the candidates are eligible to receive a fellowship from UGC.
