UGC NET Eligibility Criteria 2025

1. Educational Qualification

  • Candidates belonging to the General/Unreserved/General-EWS categories must have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in their Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from a UGC-recognized university or institution in subjects such as Humanities, Social Sciences (including languages), Computer Science, Electronic Science, etc.
  • Candidates belonging to OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/SC/ST/PwD/PwBD/Third Gender categories must have obtained at least 50% marks (without rounding off) in their Master’s degree or equivalent examination.
  • Candidates appearing for their final year Master’s degree examination or awaiting results are also eligible to apply. However, they must complete their Master’s degree within two years from the date of the NET result with the required percentage, failing which their candidature will be disqualified.
  • For candidates qualifying for ‘Ph.D. Admission Only’, the Master’s degree must be completed within one year from the date of the NET result.

2. Qualification Relaxations

  • Ph.D. degree holders whose Master’s level examination was completed by 19 September 1991 (irrespective of result declaration date) are entitled to a 5% relaxation (i.e., from 55% to 50%) in the qualifying marks.
  • Third Gender candidates receive the same relaxation in age, fee, and eligibility as SC/ST/PwD categories.
  • Candidates are advised to appear in their post-graduation subject only. If the subject is not listed in UGC NET subjects, they may appear in a related subject.

3. Eligibility for Candidates with a Four-Year Bachelor’s Degree

  • Candidates who have passed a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s Degree Programme must have secured at least 75% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade. A 5% relaxation is allowed for SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/EWS/Differently-Abled candidates.
  • Such candidates qualifying in UGC NET will be eligible only for JRF and Ph.D. admission, not for Assistant Professor appointments.
  • Final-year candidates of the Four-Year Bachelor’s Degree Programme may also apply provisionally, provided they complete the degree with the required marks within: Two years (for JRF-qualified candidates) and  One year (for Ph.D. admission only)

4. Foreign and Equivalent Qualifications

  • Candidates holding foreign qualifications must obtain an equivalence certificate from the University Grants Commission (UGC) as per the UGC (Recognition and Grant of Equivalence to Qualifications Obtained from Foreign Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2025.
  • Post-Graduate Diploma holders must verify the equivalence of their diploma with a Master’s degree from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
