Steps to Apply for IIT Patna PhD Admission 2026

Applying online is simple if you follow the steps in the right order. Read the advertisement fully before you start. Keep all your documents ready in digital format before beginning the process.

• Visit the official SBI Collect page and pay the application fee online.
• Note down the reference/journal number generated after payment.

• Fill in all personal, academic, and category details carefully.
• Upload the printed e-receipt of the fee payment.
• Submit the form and wait for the confirmation email on your registered email address.
• Take a printout of the application confirmation for use on the day of the test/interview.
• Carry all self-attested documents to the exam/interview venue on the specified date.

IIT Patna PhD Application Fees

The application fee is different for different categories and groups of candidates. You must pay the fee online through SBI Collect before filling out the form. The fee is non-refundable, so pay only when you are sure about applying.

IIT Patna PhD Age Limit

The age limit at IIT Patna applies only to candidates applying in the Teaching Assistant (Regular and Full-Time) category. There is also age relaxation for reserved category candidates. Candidates applying under Sponsored or Part-Time categories do not have a specified age limit from the institute.

IIT Patna PhD Eligibility Criteria

• M.Tech / M.E. degree with minimum CPI 6.5 or 60% marks, OR

For PhD in Science Departments:

• Phil. or Master’s in Science with minimum CPI 6.5 or 60% marks, OR
• Master’s in Engineering / Technology with minimum CPI 6.5 or 60% marks, OR
• Bachelor’s in Engineering / Technology with minimum CPI 6.5 or 60% marks.

For PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS):

• M.Phil. or Master’s in Arts / Commerce / Science / Management / MBA with minimum CPI 6.5 or 60% marks, OR
• Master’s in Engineering / Technology / Design with minimum CPI 6.5 or 60% marks, OR
• Bachelor’s in Engineering / Technology with minimum CPI 6.5 or 60% marks.

GATE / NET Requirement:

• Teaching Assistants need a valid GATE score or NET qualification.
• GATE requirement is waived for B.Tech graduates from CFTIs with CGPA ≥ 8.0.

SC/ST Relaxation:

• Eligibility criteria are relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST candidates.

For Joint PhD (IIT Patna + Lincoln University College, Malaysia):

• 4-year UG (B.Tech / B.E. / BS) with 60% or CPI 6.5, OR
• 2-year PG (M.Tech / M.E. / MS / M.Sc. / MCA / MBA) with 60% or CPI 6.5.

IIT Patna PhD Selection Process

The institute shortlists candidates based on GATE/NET scores and academic performance. Meeting the minimum eligibility does not mean you will get a call for the interview. The selection at IIT Patna is done in a fair and structured way. Below is the procedure of selection followed:

• Shortlisting: Based on GATE / NET score and marks in qualifying examination.
• Written Test / Interview: Shortlisted candidates are called for a department-level written test or interview.
• Direct Admission: Exceptionally bright candidates (B.Tech from CFTIs with CGPA > 8.0 or Masters from IITs/IISc with CGPA > 8.5, within last 5 years) may be admitted without a written test.
• Call Letter: Sent via email on 28th April 2026.
• Documents to Carry: Printout of application, all original and self-attested mark sheets from Class X onwards, caste certificate (if applicable), GATE/NET certificate, experience certificate, NOC (if required), and ID proof.

IIT Patna provides financial support to eligible Indian students who are selected as Teaching Assistants. This assistantship is governed by the Ministry of Education, Government of India norms.
