Largest floating solar power plant in India

The largest Floating Solar PV project in India has been successfully commissioned by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. The 25 MW floating Solar Power Plant project is located on 100 acres in NTPC Simhadri, a thermal power plant located in the outskirts of Visakhapatnam city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The largest floating solar power facility in India is now located in Andhra Pradesh. At its Simhadri thermal facility in Visakhapatnam, state-run NTPC NSE 1.25 percent began operations at India’s largest floating solar PV project. In addition to producing clean energy, the project will prevent water evaporation by shading the covered area. Due to the cooling effect, it will also have a higher yield than traditional ground-mounted projects.

World’s largest floating solar power plant in India

The floating solar project will be built under the Government of India’s Flexibilisation Scheme, which was announced in 2018. BHEL has created an innovative floating array to suit the one-of-a-kind requirement of anchoring the support structures without contacting or loading the reservoir floor or bund construction.
For the first time in India, this complex module array has been engineered to resist wind gusts of up to 180 km/hr. All platform structures and other equipment have been made corrosion resistant due to the project’s coastal location, which leads to significant corrosion.
Floating solar power projects are seen as a gamechanger in India’s desire to build 450 GW of renewable energy capacity due to their inherent benefits over on-land projects, which require enormous continuous expanses of non-farming, non-forest land. Water’s cooling action reduces temperature-related losses while also reducing evaporation rates and minimising maintenance costs.
The floating solar project built by NTPC covers 75 acres of the Simhadri reservoir. It would use more than a lakh solar PV modules to generate enough electricity to power 7,000 houses.
Every year, the project will save 46,000 tonnes of CO2 and 1,364 million litres of water, enough to meet the needs of 6,700 households for a year.
BHEL has the largest portfolio of floating SPV projects in the country, with over 45 MW of projects completed and another 107 MW in the pipeline.
With a total EPC portfolio of more than 1.2 GW, BHEL is India’s biggest EPC participant in the solar business. The company provides EPC services for ground-mounted, rooftop, floating, and canal-top solar facilities that are both grid-connected and off-grid.
BHEL also produces space-grade solar panels and batteries for use in space applications.
The Simhadri Station is presently the first of its kind to be fitted with an open-sea intake from the Bay of Bengal, which has been operational since the beginning of the year.

Solar Power Plant Meaning

A Solar Power Plant facilities heat a working fluid with mirrors or other reflective surfaces, which subsequently heats steam to operate a steam turbine in a traditional generation power block. Solar Power Plant, unlike PV plants, require a lot of direct normal insolation to operate well. With a few exceptions, they are only constructed in such areas. There are a variety of Solar Power plant designs that may be found in and other sources. In terms of production profiles, production is differentiated principally in terms of seasonal capability for different types of Solar Power Plant facilities without thermal storage.
The placement of parabolic troughs is intended to maximise production during the summer months. When there is enough DNI, both types of plants tend to ramp up and down quickly, partly due to other operational characteristics, such as some natural gas augmentation to manage heat transfer fluid temperatures during start-up or under temporary cloud circumstances. Solar Power Plant designs also give some inertia during periods of transitory clouds.
