28 States, 8 Union Territories, and their capitals of India: Let’s know more!

The state is divided into administrative divisions, each of which has its own elected government. The Central Government controls and administers the Union Territories, which are constituent entities.

The Governor is the executive head of a state, whereas the President is the executive head of a UT.

The state’s relationship with the federal government is federal. A UT’s relationship with the Centre is unitary. i.e. Union has complete control over all authorities.

The true head of a state is the Chief Minister. The true head of a UT is a Lieutenant.

Three of India’s eight union territories, including Delhi, Puducherry (previously Pondicherry), and Jammu and Kashmir, have their own legislatures. Every union territory and state has its own capital.

On August 5, the federal government announced the abolition of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status granted under Article 370, as well as the partition of the state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

The number of UTs has been reduced to eight with the merger of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
