List of All Presidents of India From 1947 to 2019

List of All President of India From 1947 to 2019: The president of India is the country’s head of state and the Supreme Commander of its armed forces. The president is referred to as the country’s first citizen. Despite the fact that the Indian Constitution bestows certain powers on the prime minister, the post is mostly ceremonial, and the prime minister exercises executive powers in practice.

The president is chosen by the Electoral College, which is made up of members of both houses of parliament, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, as well as representatives of state legislative assemblies. Article 56, part V, of the Indian Constitution, states that presidents can serve for a maximum of five years.

Since the establishment of the post when India has been declared a republic, with the passage of the Indian constitution in 1950, there have been 14 presidents of India. Apart from these fourteen, three acting presidents have also served briefly in the White House. After Zakir Husain died in office in 1969, Varahagiri Venkata Giri was named acting president. A few months later, Giri was elected president. He is the first person in history to have served as both president and acting president. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first president, is the only person to have served two terms in office.

Before being elected, seven presidents were members of a political party. Six of them were members of the Indian National Congress’s active political party. Pratibha Patil, the 12th president, is the first woman to hold the position, having been elected in 2007. Ram Nath Kovind was sworn in as India’s 14th president on July 25, 2017.

In the event that a president’s term of office is terminated early or while the president is absent, the vice president takes over as president. Where this is not practicable, or in any other unanticipated event, the parliament, under article 70 of Part V, may decide how to discharge the president’s powers.
