Smallest State in India: Goa’s history
The Portuguese overthrew the governing king of Bijapur, Yusuf Adil Shah, in 1510 and established a permanent settlement in Velha Goa. This was the start of the Portuguese colonial rule in Goa, which lasted four and a half centuries. In 1560, the Goa Inquisition was created as a legal tribunal. In 1812, it was ultimately repealed.
The Portuguese relocated the capital to Cidade da Nova Goa, which is now known as Panaji, in 1843. By the mid-eighteenth century, Portuguese Goa had encroached on the majority of what is now the state of Goa. At the same time, the Portuguese lost additional Indian conquests until their frontiers stabilized and the State of Portuguese India was founded.
India demanded that Portuguese possessions on the Indian subcontinent be returned to India after it gained independence from British rule in 1947, but Portugal refused to negotiate on the sovereignty of its Indian enclaves. Operation Vijay was launched by the Indian Army on December 19, 1961. It led to the annexation of Goa, as well as the islands of Daman and Diu, into the Indian union, and the formation of a centrally managed union territory of India. A referendum was held in Goa on January 16, 1967, and it was the first and only referendum held in independent India. The people of Goa had to decide whether they wanted to remain a union territory or join Maharashtra. The majority opted for the first option. The union territory was divided on May 30, 1987. Daman and Diu remained a union territory, and Goa became India’s twenty-fifth state.

Anti-royalist protests broke out in front of the Chogyal’s palace in 1973, and after the Indian Army seized over Gangtok in 1975, a referendum was held that resulted in the monarchy’s deposition. Sikkim became India’s 22nd state.
Sikkim is a multiethnic and multilingual Indian state, with official languages including English, Nepali, Sikkimese, and Lepcha, as well as Gurung, Limbu, Magar, Mukhia, Newari, Rai, Sherpa, and Tamang.
