It led to the annexation of Goa, as well as the islands of Daman and Diu, into the Indian union, and the formation of a centrally managed union territory of India. A referendum was held in Goa on January 16, 1967, and it was the first and only referendum held in independent India. The people of Goa had to decide whether they wanted to remain a union territory or join Maharashtra. The majority opted for the first option. The union territory was divided on May 30, 1987.
