What is the national vegetable of India?- Pumpkin

A round winter squash cultivar with smooth, slightly ribbed skin, Pumpkin varies in colour from deep yellow to orange. The seeds and pulp are contained within the thick shell. The name “pumpkin” is most usually applied to cultivars of Cucurbita pepo, but it is also applied to cultivars of Cucurbita maxima, C. argyrosperma, and C. moschata that have a similar appearance.

Pumpkins are one of the first domesticated plants, with evidence of use dating back to 7,500 to 5,000 BC. Pumpkins are commonly produced for commercial purposes, as well as for food, decoration, and enjoyment. Pumpkin pie is a traditional part of Thanksgiving dinners in Canada and the United States, and pumpkins are frequently carved into jack-o’-lanterns for Halloween decoration. However, commercially canned pumpkin purée and pumpkin pie fillings are typically made from different kinds of winter squash than those used for jack-o’-lanterns.

Pumpkins are produced all over the world for a number of reasons, including agricultural, commercial, and decorative ones. Only Antarctica is unable to grow pumpkins, out of all the seven continents of the world. The Connecticut field pumpkin is the classic American pumpkin for jack-o-lanterns.

Nation Vegetable of India is Pumpkin: Etymology

The English term pumpkin is derived from the Ancient Greek word pepon, which means ‘melon’, according to the Oxford English Dictionary. According to this idea, the term pumpkin evolved from the Latin word peponem and the Middle French word pompon to the Early Modern English pompion, which was transformed to the pumpkin by 17th-century English colonists shortly after their arrival in what is now the northeastern United States.

The Massachusetts term pôhpukun, which means ‘grows forth round,’ is another derivation for pumpkin. Squash is derived from a Massachusetts term that has been variously rendered as asktasquash in the closely related Narragansett language.

The term “pumpkin” is used interchangeably with “squash” and “winter squash” and has no botanical or scientific meaning. Pumpkin typically refers to only particular round orange types of winter squash, primarily derived from Cucurbita pepo, in North America and the United Kingdom, however in New Zealand and Australia, the term pumpkin applies to all winter squash.
