The floppy shape of the cap might be attributed to the pileus or pilos caps that slaves in ancient Rome were given as tokens of their freedom. The twins Castor and Pollux, who hatched from an egg and are depicted wearing the pileus, are born into a new existence with their freedom in Greek and Roman mythology.
